Molly McCabe of McCabe By Design is an experienced professional in the design and build of bath and kitchen remodels. She works to understand the needs of the homeowner while knowing the needs of the construction contractor through her years of experience as a builder. Our experience with Molly was designing a complete remodel of a small ensuite bathroom in our 1970's home. Both her use of space in our small footprint, and use of eco-friendly materials was very well done. We also enjoyed very much her working personality, it meshed well with us!

We hired Molly to design and oversee a remodel of our kitchen, laundry room and master bathroom. We had this house built 30 years ago so an update was due. Other than knowing we would have to work within the existing footprint for all three, we didn't have a lot of preconceived notions. Molly thoroughly walked us through the design and decision process and gently guided us past any bad decisions we might make. She is keenly focused on design that will allow one to gracefully and safely live in the space as we grow older. We are very happy with the completed project, we have more storage, better lighting, much nicer finishes and usability than we had previously all in the exact same space. A couple of years ago when we started talking about doing a remodel, discussing it with my partner, I suggested talking to Molly. I’d heard her give a presentation and was so impressed that we decided to reach out to her. Our first criteria was to have both a designer and contractor; someone who would oversee the entire operation as we had neither the experience or desire to tackle that on our own. Molly had given us referrals who all gave her a glowing report: on budget, on time and leaving them with a house they loved. I had the pleasure of doing a kitchen remodel with Molly McCabe and am very pleased with the results. When I bought my house in 2021, I knew the kitchen would need a major update. It was dilapidated, dark and dysfunctional. I hired Molly to do a brief design consultation. She agreed with my assessment of the space and listened carefully as I explained what I was hoping to do. She made several excellent suggestions which were later incorporated into the design. I was impressed with her depth of experience and design sensibility. She addressed all my must have features and most everything on my wish list. When executed, the design fit exactly into the modest space (14 feet by 14 feet), provided ample storage, improved workflow and efficiency, was well lit, and was beautiful to look at. After hearing a presentation by Molly McCabe (AKTW), a few years ago, when it came to considering our own remodel there was no question who to hire. Known for coming in on or below budget Molly met that criteria. It's clear she knows her stuff and for those who think it's easy handling not only different tradespeople, but personalities, particularly being in a 'man's world', she ran a tight but fair ship and all the workers I talked to privately expressed their admiration for her work. As I sit here and look at all the details in one part of our now open concept downstairs, it's a package that all works: placement of windows, lighting, etc as well as choices of trim. doors, etc. And though ultimately all the choices were ours, she nudged us in areas to find the most practical and aesthetically pleasing elements. I can honestly say, each morning when we enter this space, it's a beautiful sanctuary.

We worked with Molly McCabe of McCabe By Design (formerly a Kitchen that Works) on our kitchen and dining room remodel. It was a complete transformation – all new cabinets, flooring, appliances, fixtures, and trims. The design process was enjoyable, and she factored in our needs/wants and added suggestions to improve the project that we would never have thought of on our own. She provided guidance on selecting materials that was thoughtful and in-line with our style. Molly was mindful of our budget throughout the process and was skilled at making some minor changes to the design that didn’t affect, and sometimes improved, the overall look of the project, while saving some money. We used A Kitchen That Works for a whole house remodel. Molly was able to guide us in a systematic and organized way, especially with selecting the myriad appliances, fixtures, tiles etc, that can be quite overwhelming. Additionally, this was executed during the height of Covid, with all of the resulting supply chain issues, including some items that were discontinued or not available. Throughout it all, Molly and Clive were open and communicative and managed our expectations with patience and grace. She worked diligently to handle all of the complexities and with the highest ethical standards. We have recently moved back in and are thrilled to be living in such a “dream” space. We would use them again for future projects.

When we bought our house in 2020, we knew one of the first big projects we wanted to take on was a kitchen remodel. The kitchen was dated, small, and hidden behind walls. Absolutely no fun to cook in. A google search brought us to A Kitchen That Works, and Molly. After an extended phone consultation, and then an in-person meeting. The decision to work with Molly was an easy one. She was very knowledgable, and easy to talk to. We completed the initial design and planning stages in the Winter of 2021. Expectations and schedule were set from the get-go. We knew exactly what needed to be done (by us and her) and when. Molly is so in-tune with the industry…when she heard cabinet prices were going to be increased, she let us know immediately, and we were able to jump on ordering before it happened. Construction began in March of 2022 and was completed in June 2022. We were living in the house during construction (my husband working from home). The job site was left tidy each day. Molly has a great collection of sub contractors she works with, each one equally knowledgeable and as impeccable as her. And trust me, the poor electricians were really put to the test at our house! We only had a few small delays, neither of which were Molly’s fault (a pandemic can definitely make things difficult). But, communication was clear, and we always knew what and why something was (or wasn’t) occurring. I would absolutely work with Molly again and recommend her to anyone. She is not only an amazing designer and general contractor, but an all around good person. I will not hesitate to call her for our next remodel project. Her and Clive are now on our Holiday card list, whether they like it or not!

Our new-to-us home (built in 1973) required extensive renovation to make it suit not only our current needs, but also those of our future aging selves. We discovered Molly and Clive (A Kitchen That Works LLC) on Houzz. Hiring them to shepherd our remodel has turned out to be one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. Molly’s design expertise, especially in kitchens, baths, and aging-in-place, was absolutely tailor-made for this project. When you contract with Molly and Clive to head up your renovation, not only do you receive their incredible attention to detail, organizational/budgetary/problem-solving skills, ability to listen, caring, honesty, and just plain good sense, but you also get an amazing crew of professional subcontractors and craftspeople. This is no small thing. The very best craftspeople can afford to be particular about who they work with and that they choose Molly and Clive speaks volumes. Even though we weren’t living in the house during the remodel, Molly always ensured the property was kept as neat as possible at the end of each work day. And because we weren’t living there, she or Clive came by to water the temporarily relocated landscape shrubs and plants. Because of our own direction to increase the scope of work, followed the pandemic hit, the project schedule and budget expanded somewhat. I can’t emphasize enough how NONE of that was Molly and Clive’s fault, they kept trying to keep us informed how our desire to increase the scope of work was doing correspondingly to the budget. That being said, we still received the very best and highest value for the money spent. Bottom line: if you don’t change the scope of work, (and no natural disaster suddenly hits), the schedule and budget that Molly and Clive create will be just right. Not only do you get a talented and gifted designer but also the most thoughtful and highest quality general contractor in Kitsap County.

Molly and Clive led a complete overhaul of our aging waterfront home and transformed it into a modern, dream home that perfectly suits our family. They deftly handled the inevitable surprises that come with an extensive remodel and assembled an excellent design/build team of subcontractors, craftspeople and an architect who all made our vision a reality. We couldn't be happier with the process or the end result. We just filled our home with friends for Thanksgiving, and it was such a pleasure to entertain in this elegant space. We’ve worked with Molly and Clive twice now and they’ve completed two kitchen renovations for us. First, they helped us build a small but fully functioning kitchen in the basement of our home. What they’ve done is really impressive given that the space was not meant for a kitchen. It required electrical, plumbing and ventilation work to be done from the ground up. In addition to that, Molly designed a custom layout that fully met our needs. The result is a wonderful and functional space that even won an award in one of the local magazines. About a year later we embarked on a full remodel of our main kitchen. All cabinets and appliances were removed, and a completely new kitchen was put in. I moved to Bainbridge Island in 2013, and went looking to buy a house 6 months later with the idea of getting a great kitchen. Well, I did buy a house, but the kitchen was anything but great. However, the price of the house gave me enough room to renovate the kitchen when the time came, and it finally did in 2018. I found Molly and Clive as the result of a recommendation by a fellow Islander on Facebook, and I was immediately impressed. At the initial consultation, Molly gave me a questionnaire to fill out. It contained what I thought were very thoughtful questions that would help guide us to selecting the materials and features that would best fit my home and my style of cooking. Although I had to postpone twice, we finally got the project done in fall 2019, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. From our first meeting to job completion, everything received from Molly and Clive of A Kitchen That Works was of the highest quality. Molly and Clive of AKTW are an incredibly talented design-build team. Our project expanded our tiny kitchen and master suite, remodeled our guest bathroom and replaced our failing deck and septic system. The project also resolved longstanding issues with drainage, plumbing and ducting throughout the house. This was a large and challenging project. Molly’s sense of design is impeccable. She really listened to our desires and presented various options to consider for the layout of our rooms. She sent us on excursions to look at tile and other finishes and provided feedback to ensure everything worked well together. We live in a rambler that was built in 1972. The kitchen had been updated and the garage incorporated into the living space in 1990. The cupboards were replaced in the update but the layout remained the same as the original kitchen, galley style. It was very small and not very efficient. The original bathroom had not been updated. In the remodel, we asked Molly to change the layout of our kitchen to open it up to the dining and living room as well as update our bathroom. In the design phase, Molly was very good at listening to our ideas and desires, helping us develop a budget and choosing materials that made us happy. As for the actual project, we were very impressed by the professionalism and work of our contractor (A Kitchen That Works LLC) and the subcontractors. Everyone was very respectful of our home. Throughout the project, Molly and her crew helped us through the remodel as well as the changes that needed to be done to keep our home up to code and in compliance with current regulations. We live in an older home with a mid-century Japanese flavor. We wanted to retain the ambience but remodel from the walls in. From the beginning Molly McCabe listened to what we wanted and had us visit showrooms with products we loved. Because we chose a cook top with a venting system which was not yet available, our project was postponed twice. But Molly didn't give up on us. Our new kitchen, with cork flooring, bamboo cabinets and green granite counter tops is amazing. But most of all, what was amazing was Molly's attention to all, I do mean all, the details. The contractor's she used were top notch and followed her plans exactly. There is nothing that I can think of that is missing or incomplete. And there are many finishing touches that I could never even have thought to ask for that just came with the package.

We are ecstatic about the job Molly McCabe and her team at AKTW did for us in our kitchen. At 40-years old it was ugly and dysfunctional. It is now warm & soothing, drop-dead gorgeous and TOTALLY functional. Almost every day, one of us still says, "Didn't Molly have a good idea about ________? Isn't it just perfect now?" We live in a condominium with very strict remodel rules. We needed a detailed written plan and time schedule, and then we had a site visit by the entire condo board before approval of our plan. With the guidance of AKTW, we passed muster easily. More importantly, we ourselves loved the planning procedure and outcome. All subcontractors came on schedule and performed well -- within 2% of the projected budget. We can't think of anything to complain about or regret.

Molly gave my wife and I wonderful advice on our kitchen remodel. She went over all the design choices available at her kitchen design studio, which helped us visualize what our kitchen might look like. She went into great detail on counter top surfaces, cook tops, cabinet layouts and even hardware such as drawer pullouts. Molly went over all the details in an extremely knowledgeable and non judgmental fashion, which really worked for my wife and I. Our kitchen remodel really benefited from her expertise and I can see her design influences throughout the kitchen, a kitchen that we really love cooking in.

A Kitchen That Works remodeled 2 bathrooms and a laundry area-all at the same time. Molly was just great to work with on our complete bathroom gut and rebuild. She listened (and remembered) our key issues for the room and kept us on track. What we liked: Open, clear communication; attention to detail; great control of the project from start to finish so it started on time and finished very close to schedule despite the usual bumps and surprises of remodels that we were largely able to let her deal with; adherence to our budget and project estimates; tidy jobsite and good subcontractors. Quality is seldom a bargain, but we definitely feel like we got a good value and design without reno headaches.

We moved from the Midwest and purchased a home we loved - except for the kitchen. Knowing we would soon be hosting family and friends for our son's wedding celebration and being unfamiliar with contractors and suppliers in the area, we hired A Kitchen That Works. We decided to keep our existing cabinets but needed new appliances, countertops, tile, and sink. In addition, Molly suggested we reverse the position of some of the appliances to provide a more functional layout. This necessitated some new custom cabinet doors, panels, and valence which do match the existing cherry cabinets perfectly. It is a true joy to watch a remodel come to completion so professionally and beautifully - and in time for the wedding.

If you read through a few other reviews of A Kitchen That Works, you will begin to see a pattern… attention to detail; meticulous documentation; exemplary work ethic; meeting or exceeding deadlines; wonderful communication; knowledgeable; organized; working tirelessly. We saw all of this in action. And it’s all true. In addition, Molly McCabe’s follow-through was extraordinary. If she said a sub-contractor was going to arrive at a certain time, she made sure it happened. She made sure that every detail (and there were many) was fulfilled to our satisfaction. If our satisfaction was not as exacting as Molly’s, then it was fulfilled to HER satisfaction. Molly, and her partner Clive Pardy, worked with us as designer and contractor for an extensive remodel consisting of the kitchen, family room, three bathrooms, laundry room, and master bedroom. All design work and the beginning of the actual construction occurred while we were living overseas. The logistics of having our dreams, wants, and “need-to-haves” become reality from a distance of over 5,000 miles was daunting, but Molly and Clive made it happen in a timely manner, with ideas that were better than what we had ever envisioned, and in meticulous detail. They were working under a deadline, as we needed to move back into our home within two months of returning from overseas. From the onset of the actual construction we were given a detailed and accurate timeline that Clive produced based upon his construction experience. And even though we added significantly to the original contract, exactly two months after we returned to the States we were able to move into our home. It was amazing to see how well Molly and Clive worked together - with Molly working to her strengths of design, organization and follow-through, and Clive with his construction and financial expertise. The idea of building or renovating a home can be a scary and stressful experience. When we originally had our home built 24 years ago by another company that certainly was the case. This time, Molly and Clive made sure that our stress was minimized and that the renovation process went as smoothly as possible. Our thanks to Molly and Clive for a job well done!

My project was a small one for this company. I needed a few things fixed in a small laundry room - no walls, no floors, just amazing attention to details. From the location to the soap dispenser to quality of the sink, Molly was actively involved and made sure everything worked as I needed. We used A Kitchen That Works for an extensive remodel of our newly purchased townhome. They designed our new kitchen, master bath and walk-in closet. They took down walls and put up new ones, changed plumbing and wiring, installed fixtures, and appliances. Everything was done on schedule and was done perfectly! My wife and I have done a great deal of construction over the years, including remodels, room additions, damage restoration, and building a house from the ground up; we have had some good experiences and some that were not so good. While we didn't go through the bid and design process for purely logistical reason, I'm in Mukilteo and the firm is on Bainbridge, Molly played a substantive roll in the quality and search for my final kitchen design and contractor choice. Kitchen and Bath remodel in a 1960's beach cottage. Molly acted as the designer and contractor. She designed the kitchen and bath basically using the same blueprint, but made the spaces more efficient, provided more storage, and used materials that were easier to clean. She helped with the selection of materials including appliances, cabinets, lighting, hardware, etc. Molly was a stickler for detail, quality of products, communication, and professionalism. She also expected this from all the subcontractors. I love the finished result. It is a joy to be in these 2 new rooms and it has made my entire house feel so much nicer. It was a pleasure working with Molly and the entire team.

From the very simplest lighting design (Molly turned a clear shade of a light fixture down instead of up and the lighting was dramatically better for that one tiny movement) to larger projects (just short of a complete kitchen remodel), Molly has helped us save time and money (my husband's goal in life). This was a remodel/ rebuild after water damage to the floors & cabinets. The kitchen, a 1/2 bath, living & dining areas all were stripped to the slab by the insurance company's demo contractor. Molly & Clive helped us get organized, then worked with us to replan the space. We decided to install electric floor heat to replace failing ceiling elements, in addition to replacing the floor tiles. We put in new cabinets, bath & kitchen fixtures, counters, and reused the old appliances. Molly worked with us to understand how we used the rooms, then designed them to improve ease of use. She deployed us on shopping expeditions to find the best values for what we wanted to install. She has a squad of highly skilled subs that worked hard & meticulously on our house. She or Clive was onsite several days a week to ensure only the best quality work was done. We couldn't be more pleased with the outcome, and will certanly make AKTW the first choice for any work we may do in the future.
