I have never really understood why people with perfectly good taste hire designers - until now! We could not be happier with Michael Gainey! When we decided to retire to our aging vacation apartment on the ocean, we were overwhelmed at the prospect of trying to make it a real home. I enlisted Michael's expertise last summer to assist with decorating my entire house to include new tile floors, painting of every wall and remodeling the master bath. Though the project was completed last fall, I was only recently able view the finished product. I can say is I'm 100% pleased with the results! Michael's knowledge of colors, taking the basics colors my wife wanted and providing recommended shades to complement each other, was brilliant. His keen understanding of what the finish result would be was remarkable. I admit that I initially had doubts over redesigning the Master Bath, though Michael worked with us taking our descriptions of what we were looking for to provide the perfect design. As Michael kept stating, the process was fluid and organic, gaining life as we proceeded. The end result, including the beautiful mirrors and lighting Michael sourced, well exceeding my expectations! His vision was exceptional. As we were new to the area, at my request, Michael was able to assemble a talented team that were professional, courteous and an absolute pleasure to work with in every phase of the remodel. My wife and myself thoroughly enjoyed working with Michael on this project. He was professional yet personable and worked with us on every aspect of the project to ensure the finished result reflected our personality. At Preston Studios we often find that an interior designer can "translate" for us. Michael has that "art speak" we need to understand exactly what clients (who are often high level professionals in their own fields) need and want. In one particular case the client wanted something along the Frank Lloyd Wright look in stained glass, but as Michael put it "not strictly." The result was perfect for both the home and the client and his help/approval in colors was also right on. Anyone would find working with Michael an easy task.

Michael Gainey came to my home and gave me great ideas about colors to use to make things "pop" and to make sure I use colors that blend with my decor. The color he advised me to use is perfect! He explained how the items I have can be used as they are and educated me about different styles and gave me ideas on fabrics to use on my wing chairs that will best compliment my room. He also took time to explain how to arrange my pictures and how to best place my accessories. It was such a pleasant experience. He has impeccable taste and a wonderful sense of style and is fun to work with. You can tell how much he enjoys his profession and has a good relationship with his clients. We had a new office built out recently and incorporated Michael's services from the beginning. We are a boutique financial planning and investment management firm and wanted a boutique-type feel for our office. Michael worked with our construction supervisor and provided input along the way. I obviously had to make some decisions and be somewhat involved in the process, but Michael's personal service and follow up made that easy. He truly cares about the work that he does and we are thrilled with the end result. Everyone who comes into our office comments on how nice it turned out.

Michael is the greatest! I had used Houzz to find an interior designer, and contacted a few different ones in the area. Some contacted me after a few days, others never responded at all, but Michael responded within an hour (at 11pm at night!) I appreciate those who really understand the value of their clients. Within a few moments with Michael, I could tell he understood me 100%, and I immediately felt comfortable having him make the decisions for me. Michael Gainey is an amazing designer! He truly has a talent – not only in design but also in listening to his clients and learning their individual tastes. A snowbird from PA, I “found” Michael on the Internet. I liked what I saw on his website and decided to call him when I decided to remodel our master bath. I knew it was going to be a major project and wasn’t confident in picking out the tiles and all that goes with it on my own. The transformation from our 1980's master bath to our luxurious spa/retreat was amazing! I found Michael to be so upbeat, fun and professional. Throughout the project, I was even more impressed with Michael. He gives 110% in all he does and is not afraid to regroup, rethink, if he feels something isn’t right. Michael is the utmost professional which added to his talent in design and years in the business makes him number one in my book. My husband and I love Michael and will be working with Michael on future projects along with his son Bryson who is as talented as his dad! Michael has just an amazing knowledge of design and an ability to take what you're passionate over and make that a reality! Chatting with others regarding the space under design and what I had in mind, most would simply say, "well it depends on your taste," or, "if that's what you like." That, of course, is true. It's my space and it needs to be my taste. But just because I like the Greek key design and Turkish Iznik patterns and old New York subway tiles and turquois, does not mean that they all thrive together in one room! It was not until working with Michael did I realize that I did not want an arrangement of all my favorite things, where nothing would stand out and be striking, because it was all competitive. Michael is the king of understatement and what's classic, and never looks to overdesign. Michael will be forthcoming and tell you if some things can stay "as is" and be part of the final design. Many designers are looking to start with a clean palate. It's as if they have a vision, but cannot see the pieces and elements already there. If you want to start fresh and completely gut a space, I have no doubt Michael can make your vision a reality. But perhaps it's more of a skill to work with existing components or finishes to accomplish your goals. For me, the job at hand is a public bathroom in a building constructed in 1925. I love the penny tile floor, subway tile walls, and marble stall dividers. But at 90 years old, the wear and tear has taken its toll. The office and retail tenants have been after me to "renovate" it, and that conditioned me into thinking a complete redesign was the only option. But, Michael's love for the classic and appreciation for history caused me to rethink that! We're going to redo do the floor with brand new penny tile! It will be new and clean and not rusty but still look like 1925. Additionally, we're going to add a black and white Greek key inset for even more history and character, which certainly could have been part of the original design 90 years ago! We're going to leave 90 percent of the subway tile, since brand new pure white subway tile will not look like the beautifully aged character of the 90 year old tile. But for those pieces that are broken or otherwise damaged, we will replace with other subway tile from 1925 that I have in other places in the building, utilizing material from storage areas and the like that are hidden. The marble stalls will be cleaned with acetone and polished up. The original toilets will be pulled, cleaned and restored, and brand new valves and pipes will be custom made by Sloan valve company designed for their legacy toilets. A new vanity and marble top to accent the marble stall dividers. And the walls areas not covered with subway tile will be plastered smooth, which is a New York look I love and miss in this world of "knockdown" walls and other texture methods designed to hide imperfections. Michael is designing drapes for the schoolhouse-looking window with a very subtle Greek motif. I can't wait to see them! I conceded to Michael's expertise that adding Turkish Iznik picture tiles would simply be too much of a distraction from the clean, dramatic, and classic New York look. I'll save those for another project, and of course, Michael will be involved in that! Back to Michael's expertise. He doesn't just have gut feelings about design. He understands history and what components were typical in every era! He is a delight to work with, and I truly say "work with" because although he is the expert, I felt that he took my passions and thoughts and made them his own. If he was designing the same space for anyone else, the end product would be completely different, although it would still be amazing and a perfect expression of the owner. That's a master!

Known Michael for about 15 years. Have seen many homes that have had Michael's special touch. Always beautiful work, always professional...but also he becomes your new best friend...for life. My sister is cur renting having her house done by Michael. Can't wait to see the final reveal!

Michael is an outstanding decorator and is warm and friendly. His knowledge is suberb and he applies it to your personal decorating needs. If you need a professional to either fine tune or completely take the reigns of your project, he is there for you. Years ago my husbands two health professional offices were in need of redecorating and he was spot on with timeless execution. I recently hired him to help with our recently purchased older beachside rental house property's exterior and interior painting needs. His suggestions were exactly what was needed to "make her graceful". We couldn't be more pleased with the results. He is genuine and fun to work with! Went to Michael again for the renovation and major addition needs at my husbands multi doctor practice. Michael is a true professional. I had hesitation using a decorator but my busy schedule was the deciding factor in moving forward with this decision. Michael is one of the best designers we have worked with in remodeling our home. A few years ago we had remodeled other areas and when I had to complete a few additional rooms, we decided to choose another designer; we contacted Michael and we wish we had chosen him at the beginning ! He looked at our entire home carefully, what we had done, and what needed attention, and formulated a design and plan that flowed with our home and complimented our style. The living and dining areas are not only warm and calming, they are now rooms I enjoy using more frequently . Michael is also practical and incorporates keepsakes (and other items you may hold near and dear to you) into the new design . We mixed new and current furniture and added accents to our rooms. We added an outdoor area to our plan and it now looks better than ever. We plan to use Michael to complete our guest rooms and add to our family room/kitchen areas for some final touch ups. Outstanding service, great ideas, great follow through made for an excellent experience. Remodel of 1993 house. Created a craftsman theme which incorporated our furniture and taste. New floors, new paint colors inside and out, new fixtures, new furniture, pavers for pool deck, arrangement of personal art and photos, changed drywall arches to cased openings, new trim style, and more. Also changed out old leaking picture window with hurricane impact glass through his contractors. Probably forgetting things as we did so much. Michael was always prompt, professional, friendly and caring in his interaction. He gave us a great amount of his time and never indicated it was too much. We are very happy with Michael's service and highly recommend him for any renovation or design service.

Michael Gainey has an intuitive and creative ability to go beyond his customers' wishes for great design. I sought his expertise for a living room window treatment that would frame the beautiful scenery of a rolling golf course behind my house. Michael's sketch for the project was so much more than I had hoped. Without detracting from the exterior view, he chose soft shades and textures to compliment the colors of nature, while at the same time, enhancing the interior's palette and furniture style. His unique design, incorporating small amounts of five complementary fabrics and trims is breath-taking and never fails to elicit an "ah-h-h" as first-time visitors enter the front door of my home.

I initially hired Michael to implement his well known "fluff and buff" service. He came to my home and reorganized furniture and accessories to show them to their full potential. I was very impressed with how little changes made a big difference. I asked Michael for some suggestions for my master bedroom. We enhanced my bed and bath by changing my paint colors and adding to my window treatments. My bedroom is now very soft and welcoming. Lastly, I wanted to change my sofa and chair which were showing wear. Michael helped me pick a great quality sofa, chair, and coffee table that really gives my family room some pizazz. Not only did Michael listen to the goals for the look I was trying to achieve but he made them a reality for me and the result was even better than I envisioned.
