Haley Whiteside Design is a unique custom home design studio. We are based on California’s beautiful Mendocino Coast in Fort Bragg where we serve clients in Mendocino and Lake Counties. Our commitment to our clients is to offer them a unique opportunity to discover a built environment that truly supports their lifestyle and that nurtures and protects yet celebrates the unique site characteristics and qualities of their property. Through site and spatial planning both indoors and out, we help them to visualize their dream with our unique perspective. From initial concept through construction documents we help them make a dream a reality. We work to create beautiful, responsive and sensitively-sited architecture that reflects and responds to its local and regional context while truly expressing the unique character, needs and dreams of its owners and their surroundings. We strive to capture a sense of place through the careful and considerate use of building orientation, material selection and environmentally sensitive building methods. In a world so threatened with the ongoing senseless waste of precious land and resources, our design studio is a small oasis where together we will discover creative solutions empowered by a thoughtful and caring design process. Kate Haley received her bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the University of Oregon. For over 30 years she has been involved in design, site planning and master planning of single and multi-family residential projects as well as lighting design at both the residential and commercial levels. Mo Whiteside has a wide range of experience as a designer and builder with a special emphasis in quality detailing and fine woodworking.

Kate and Mo are an absolute godsend. We were in the planning stages of our home construction, with funding timelines looming, when our architect took ill and had to drop out. We were frantic and everyone we talked to was unwilling or unable to take on our project. We remembered having been impressed with Haley Whiteside's designs, as they meshed with our own aesthetic and decided to give them a call. When we met Kate and Mo at our lot, they initially declined because they had already too much work to do. We begged and asked if they could help us with the site plan and engineering, only. They agreed. They took on our project, despite having an already heavy workload, to help us meet our strict timeline. They listened to our concerns and our wants and incorporated them into the site plan from the very beginning. They answered questions that I did not know to ask and also were able to discern what I meant when I did not know how to frame a question. At every step of the way, we were able to rely on their excellent advice and expertise. Their humor, good grace and professionalism made the entire process less stressful. Their fees are eminently reasonable and were a small fraction of what we had originally expected to pay. We hope to never have to build another house, but if we do, we would retain Haley Whiteside Design in a heartbeat. We cannot say enough good things about them. If you have a chance to use their services, you would be well-served to do so.

Kate and Mo were wonderful for helping create the vision for our property, especially a separate office workspace building. The office design exceeded our expectations, and their expertise and knowledge were invaluable for our site plan and looking at how to best situate structures on the land. Highly recommend!

An exceptional high ceiling concept just perfectly realized. So much light! Such openness of feeling is engendered when walking into the spaces. Just wonderful. I couldn't be happier with the result. We are very appreciative of the effort of both Kate and Mo to provide us honest and detailed information in addition to possible designs. Most importantly, they helped us to come to the difficult decision that the design we wanted was not financially feasible at this time. I hired Kate and Mo to design and draft the plans for a theatre workshop I constructed for our experimental theatre group. I had an idea as to what it should be, which I gave to them, and they developed plans for a building that were in accord with and extended, enhanced and refined what I was looking for and the result is a building that is simply beautiful, with a symmetry and a formality to it, that represents our need for the space to be an invocation for the unique creative inspiration that we looking for the place to engender. They were essential partners in what was a seamless design process.

Our experience with Haley-Whiteside Design was positive in every way. We brought a general idea for the design of our home, and Kate Haley and Mo Whiteside expanded and improved on our idea to create a lovely plan for our home. It was to our advantage to have Haley-Whiteside design our home as they work well together as a team. Kate is a creative and talented designer with many ideas and Mo’s attention to detail and knowledge of the specifics created the perfect combo to allow us complete confidence in them both. The work they completed included navigating the permit process, and they both responded in a timely manner to all questions from the building contractor. We found them to be professional, skilled, competitive in price, and likeable people. We can highly recommend them with confidence.

Mo and Kate are a remarkable team, combining the best features of architecture, design and craftsmanship. Because of my age (87) and having been diagnosed with Parkinson’s 11 years ago, I had very specific requirements for a therapeutic pool that I could walk into easily from my bedroom. Working with this space was itself very challenging. But when the pool was finished, I was extremely pleased with how Mo and Kate made it blend seamlessly with the existing deck and surroundings. The pool is beautifully situated so that it feels like I am in a tree house with an expanded view looking out over the trees and landscape below. The lighting is recessed and gives a soft glow at night so the pool feels very warm and inviting. The wood interiors are beautifully and precisely done and contribute to the feeling of warmth and coziness. You can see from the photos the incredible attention to detail. The railings were hand done and blend in with the architecture of the connecting deck so that it all feels continuous. This pool is so perfectly suited to my needs that I haven’t missed a day since it was installed 6 months ago! Mo and Kate have done a number of very significant projects on my property over the years, and I have always been extremely pleased with the results. But this project in particular far surpassed all my expectations. Thank you Mo and Kate!

Mo and Kate are talented designers with an amazing eye for detail. I loved all the special touches they brought to our project: recessed lighting, electrical plugs hidden underneath the cabinets, a beautiful rounded bar countertop. When we had to cut costs, the suggestions they made actually improved the space: vinyl tile that looks like the real thing but is much easier on the legs and ceramic tile for the countertops that is beautiful and has less grouting than the usual tile. They were easy to work with and happily incorporated our suggestions into the design. They have a unique ability to combine aesthetic sensibilities with practicalities so that the finished product is pleasing on all levels. I can highly recommend Mo and Kate!

My husband and I used Haley Whiteside Design and we are so glad we did!! We had an idea/ vision for the house, but they really brought it home and made it even more amazing than we could have ever imagined! We are so appreciative of what they had to offer -- they are so professional and they really took the time to get to know us and what we were envisioning. They came back with such creative and fresh ideas and we were really glad they were so conscious of our budget! Our house feels so wonderful to come home -- we appreciate it every day -- would DEFINITELY recommend them to anyone!!!!

In 2007, my husband and I hired Haley Whiteside Design to help us consider our lot and our ideas about the house we wanted to build. We were very impressed with Kate’s and Mo's ability to listen to us and incorporate our thoughts and ideas into a plan that we could use. We very much appreciated their understanding of our concerns for the trees on our lot and our desire to preserve the natural beauty of the environment. They took into account the way the orientation of the house to optimize how the sun would hit our future home. We decided to purchase online a house plan, and we asked them to modify it to meet our lifestyle needs. They re-designed the whole back of the house to include a covered porch and two French doors increasing the expanded feeling of the living and dining room spaces. To further enhance this quality, they re-worked the plan to include raised ceilings and larger windows throughout the structure. They had great ideas and did a great job for us. We would highly recommend them to anyone looking to create a beautiful home.

I'm a general contractor and had the pleasure of building an 800 sq. ft. home designed by Mo Whiteside and Kate Haley. I say pleasure because rarely do I find architects who put as much attention on detail as Mo and Kate do. The house is beautiful--well proportioned, quality finishes, and it incorporates advanced concepts in building science, which few architects remain current on. When questions arose around detailing (and they always do), Mo and Kate responded quickly so construction could continue without delay. In short, they have a great sense of design, knowledge of construction, and are easy to work with.
