For over 10 years, Julie Firkin Architects has been bringing creativity and problem-solving prowess to projects big and small in and around Melbourne. An award-winning firm, headed up by architect Julie Firkin, we pride ourselves on a personal and people-focussed approach to architecture. Julie has a hands-on approach to all projects and designs by visualising herself in the space which helps to create homes that are a joy to live in and spaces that are both practical and beautiful. Julie studied and practiced internationally and worked for several years at renowned practices. She brings this breadth of experience to her private practice, weaving a local approach and an international perspective into everything she does. While Julie Firkin Architects has the skills and expertise to deliver a range of projects, from residential to commercial, small to large, Julie has a personal interest in both sustainable and bushfire-resistant design. Her design for a bushfire-resistant house was featured by the Bushfire Homes Service following the Black Saturday Bushfires in 2009 and Julie has also taught extensively on the subject. Julie Firkin Architects are excited to be exhibited next year in Venice and three of our designs will grace the pages of Top 100 Houses by Thomas Drexel.

We are very happy with Julie's design and work on the major renovations to our home (a much loved 1920s Californian bungalow). A major part of the brief for Julie was to improve the connectivity between the house and garden - mission accomplished. The vast sliding glass doors and screens allow easy and substantial access direct from the house to the garden in fine weather and provide a wonderful outlook that embraces the whole garden, no matter the weather or season. We love the laser-cut shade screen, it provides that very necessary protection in the height of summer and is a thing of beauty from inside and out. The view through the house from the front door continues to delight, new visitors and old. Best of all, the house really works for us. We have big family gathering here and the family room and deck are a dream - everyone loves the visibility into the backyard to keep an eye on the youngsters and in the late afternoon the broad expanse of steps are great for lounging about, enjoying a wine and the garden. It's been a few years since the renovation was completed - still looks stunning and functioning as we wanted.

Julie has created an excellent design for our internal renovation of a 1920s brick house in Melbourne. We had a layout issue created by a previous owner's renovation (which another architect couldn't solve despite three attempts). Julie found a solution quickly and we're excited to see the design become a reality once Melbourne's restrictions allow new building projects again. Julie is a clear communicator and has worked hard to turn our ideas into reality. She has been flexible and creative, and given helpful feedback about how to create a coherent flow throughout the house and maximise storage and light. Once we build Julie's plan, I'm confident that we'll use every room in the house! Julie came highly recommended by other architects we know, and we're pleased to give her a 5* review here on Houzz.

Julie is a highly competent/ skilled architect. I required urgent planning/building permits for fence & construction works. Her work in drawing required specification/ supporting documents was of high quality & her dealing with the council/ responsible authorities efficient. Our permits were issued in record time. She is an award winning architect for creative design & an excellent communicator. I highly recommend her.
