I just wrapped construction on my second house where Jim made all the selection of colors and interior finishes. My first experience with Jim was almost 10 years ago on a house where he assisted in the interior selections. There is a funny story related to that. As the house was wrapping up and the painting was completed, I was a little worried that the colors were not going to work for me. I decided I would just deal with it in a year or two after construction was complete. However, once the flooring was installed, I walked into the house and it was everything I wanted. From that point on, I would always have faith in Jim's ability to take tiny samples and envision how they would all come together to create perfection! So, when it came time to build my new dream retirement house, I knew Jim had to be involved. I sent him the floor plan and my only instructions were I wanted "modern woodsy" for a house that was going to sit in the middle of 100 acres on a lake. He ran with that and managed to pull a design scheme together that I am so happy to look at every day. Virtually everyone that comes to the house compliments his design choices and how he managed to pull all the flooring, wall colors, cabinets and natural stone together to create my little paradise.

When it came time to update our north woods-lodge themed cabin to a modern lake home, we knew exactly who to contact for design help. Four years earlier, Jim Kuiken had helped us create our modern dream home and working with him was the best part of that new-home-building experience. Jim has an easy way of guiding you to making the best decisions in all aspects of putting together your ideal home. He's extremely skilled in knowing every detail in how a family will live in the house (like the absolutely amazing kitchen he designed for us). He's candid in his opinions, always helping his clients think outside the box, but never in a way that makes you feel like you're being overruled if you have differing ideas. Our lake home presented some challenges, mostly because we were changing styles from knotty pine and log railings to mostly light, airy and modern without losing all of the rustic north woods esthetic. He helped us pull it off without a hitch and we couldn't be happier with the end result. We feel like we've built the perfect lake home for our needs and we couldn't have done it without Jim Kuiken Design.

We would not have been able to get the wonderful home we have with out Jim's help. We had lived in our old home for 30 years, so this was a big change for us. He was with us every step. He visited us in our old home to get a feel of who we were and how we lived. He understood what we wanted and worked that into our new home. It was easy to work with Jim because he is just a nice guy. Listened to our wishes and made them happen. He helped with every detail from the lights, to the knobs!
