This was the fourth home we built, and finally got it right! Our home is one story, 2,500 sq ft, on a slab with a full partially finished attic. Zac Davis Fine Woodworking (Zac) was referred to us by a friend in the construction business and my son, who is a stone mason. Both had previous experience with Zac and his team on other jobs.
As the General Contractor, Zac was responsible for every aspect of our construction from excavation to finish work. This included the scheduling of all subcontractors as well as supervision of their work product. The major subcontractors handled excavation, plumbing, electrical and painting. All carpentry was handled by Zac and his team, from framing and roofing to finish work.
In total, the home construction cost $650,000. It helps to understand that high end products were used, such as Marvin doors and windows, central air, radiant heat, appliances, and solid fir wood doors and crown molding throughout, cement board siding, a full wrap around farmer’s porch with ipe decking and a fir bead board ceiling. Zac himself built the supports poles for the half walls and the fireplace mantle, matching the arts and craft style of the rest of the house. He also hand built our screen porch from Meranti (a mahogany), and fully wrapped screening under the porch for insect control.
Zac handled the business side beautifully. For each and every piece of material he used, he provided a copy of the invoice, a comforting thing for an old accountant. His pricing as proposed was basically as it came out except where we added or changed what we originally planned or expected. His profit margin was handled with a management fee, which never changed though we added more expensive items, and had Zac custom build cabinetry in each of our walk-in closets. Everything was transparent right from the beginning, and communication was open and frequent.
He also dealt with me and my wife extremely well. Though I believe he sided with her most of the time, he kept things calm throughout, and kept us so well informed there were no surprises and thus no arguments, like you always hear about when couples are building.
The whole engagement was handled as though he and his team were trained in customer service. It is an attitude Zac brings to his work. I recall him saying he didn’t want us to be pleased or happy with our home, but that he wanted us to be ecstatic about it. And we are all of that!
We would recommend Zac without hesitation and invite anybody considering his Company to come and visit our home. You, like everybody who has been here, will walk away with admiration of his craftmanship.
