Originally from Osaka in Japan I moved to England in 1996 to further develop my furniture making techniques and skills. During my first few years in London I formally studied furniture making and I hold City & Guilds Advanced Furniture Making and Upholstery qualifications. Passionate about bespoke designs and creations I founded Tanahara Furniture in 2000 and since then I have built up a diverse and valued client base made up of private individuals and businesses, mainly from word of mouth personal recommendations. I have workshop facilities in both Manchester and London so can easily accept commissions from across the UK

I have worked with Isao on many projects for over 15years. He has never disappointed me and always give a pleasure working with. With a background of an architect and project manager in Japan for 7 years, his comprehensive and meticulous approach generates best and innovative solution for every single project. I can say that he is one of the most reliable and highly recommendable professional partner.
We have commissioned two pieces of work from Tanahara Furniture - some fitted wall units and a set of 6 dining chairs. We are delighted with both. For the wall units Isao listened to our ideas and took detailed measurements of the space. He then sent high quality illustrations of how the finished units might look. We didn't need to make any alterations to these. Isao constructed the furniture off site. It then only took a couple of days for him to install it. Our requirements re: the chairs were quite specific. We had not been able to find anything suitable in the shops. Once again Isao sent through, first of all, some illustrations and then a mock up. We only had to make one small alteration. The finished items are perfect.
Isao Tanahara is a marvellous designer. He has a genius for transforming a room in a way that one would never have thought possible. When I moved into my loft apartment I was apprehensive about what to do with it; a beautiful bare space with light and original brickwork. I only knew that I wanted it to have a 'lightness of being' that fitted in with its contemporary and chic look. I knew I could trust Isao to transform the space to a new and exciting level. Isao has done several extraordinary pieces of precision work for me which have delivered great subtleness of design with a real statement. My shelves have a clever mix of glass and light and ingeniously follow the signature colours for some of the furnishings in my apartment. He has made a truly original 'memory box' - a beautiful blend of glass, colour and light and he created two exceptional side tables to show my vintage typewriters. His 'lightness of being' shelves have given life to corner spaces. All stunning 'Isao genius pieces' and all admired by those who come to my flat. Isao has a unique and talented blend of the artist as well as the designer within him. He is also passionate about his work. When he finishes a piece and I see it for the first time, I am always astounded. I have more work for Isao and I am hoping (selfishly) that he doesn't get too booked up so that I won't have to wait for too long for the next job! Jennifer - Spitalfields
