I have been most fortunate to find and engage both a builder and a designer in the area who rank in my book as number one. The two companies are HomeSite improvements and Charcoal Lane. I have used their talents on several projects over the last year or so. I first encountered HomeSite Improvements when the owner/builder, Jason Knox, built front entrance railings for me – small job but I noticed his care and the perfection in his work. I next used Jason’s company to re-build the deck across the back of my home. This was a large deck. In deciding what I should do and what I wanted Jason made some very good recommendations which, in the long run, will save me both maintenance and money. The next project was to build an outbuilding to function as a workshop/utility building. The care, perfection and quality were everything I expected -- and I’m not easy to please. Again, he made suggestions to improve both function and ease of use. My next project was a major remodel of our master bathroom. Knowing Jason’s workmanship and the quality of his work I wanted HomeSite Improvements to do the job. The job required more than just building/construction skills. I felt it needed a designer to be involved – and I ran this by Jason. He thought this would be a good idea also. Maybe it was a case of “two heads are normally better than one.” In terms of functionality I knew what I wanted as a finished product but I’m not a designer (and thankfully I recognized this). I did not know of a designer, especially one who would try to design what I wanted, not what the designer wanted. So, I asked Jason if he knew of such a designer. He said he did – a person who ran a company called Charcoal Lane. He followed that with the fact that this person was also his wife, Ali Knox. Okay, so I checked into this. We had Ali meet with us to hear about her work, get some feel for her design style, etc. What really happened in that meeting was that Ali sought to get to know us, know about our home, how we lived, what our “style” was, etc. – her mantra being that she designs to please the client aimed at giving them what they like. This was exactly what we were looking for and comfortable with in a designer. Charcoal Lane was asked to do the design work for the project. As an added benefit I saw that communication between designer and builder would be much easier and there would be less time wasted. The design presented to us was awesome. Actually several designs were initially presented and through discussion, pro and con, a design was finalized. Jason had input to the design from a builder’s point of view – more of the advantage of having Jason and Ali working closely on this. The remodel went fine. The end product was everything we hoped for and more. I watched most of the remodel, learning by watching the manner in which Jason did his work. The planning was a key to the success – everything was thought through beforehand. Little or no time was wasted and quality was in every step. Ali came on site several times to see how the job was coming along and to insure we were pleased with things…and we were. Having completed the remodel of the master bathroom, we moved on to a yet larger project: the remodel of our kitchen, laundry room and powder room. Again, I asked Charcoal Lane (Ali) and HomeSite Improvements (Jason) to take on the project. Our goal was to upgrade and also increase functional space in these areas. The design work was awesome – several presented, discussed, revised, and finalized. The product, which is currently wrapping up, is fantastic. We are achieving everything we set out to do (or I should say Ali and Jason are giving us this goal). In the course of this project a wall was moved, flooring replace right down to and including subfloor, cabinets designed and installed including an island with specific needs included, redoing all wiring and lighting, tile flooring, plumbing re-routed, and painting. The quality was there in all projects these two companies and individuals have done for us. Additional words I would use include: caring, perfection, accommodating, knowledgeable, a joy to work with, reasonable, commitment, honest, detail oriented, and just plain good people. I intend to use these two people and their companies in the future.
