The Shirley group LLC

We purchased a home in 2018 that was a massive fixer-upper, knowing that it was beyond our personal abilities to do ourselves. This is the fourth home that we have taken on in similar conditions. We did our due diligence, came up with our budget, and met with multiple contractors, architects, inspectors, etc. to see who would be willing to help us take on this project. After several meetings, we felt that The Shirley Group would be the best fit for undertaking this project with us. For the most part, we really enjoyed working with the Shirleys. They were responsive and worked hard to keep us in budget. I had to limit my review to a short amount of characters, but included the major issues we had after the fact. We had removed manufactured hardwoods and gone with their suggestion of putting down 5" oak true hardwoods in its place. Two days after the hardwoods went down, before staining, they started to warp and cup in multiple areas of the house. This was concerning a bit, as the wood had only had a couple of days to acclimate in the house, and it was when the (new) A/C had malfunctioned. The sub-contractor pulled up the areas that were warped and put down new pieces. The stain went down a day or two later, but again, the boards kept warping in those same areas. Over the span of the first year we were in the house, we had to relocate twice while they pulled up sections of wood, replaced, re-sanded and then re-stained. Each time they had to do so, the house was a disaster and required us to move furniture out, deep clean all the sanding dust, and move back in. Every time we saw another board warping, it was dreadful to think of doing this again. The last time the subcontractors came back in, we found black mold under the flooring as it was being removed. This discovery led us to find that the subcontractor never actually installed a moisture barrier on the slab, and had glued the boards directly to the concrete. We also found that the subs they used to install the exterior doors did not properly caulk or place leveling pads when they put in two sets of French doors, and a single door - therefore causing a perfect storm for water intrusion. Each time it rained, water was seeping in the sides of the doors, down the walls, and under the floors. The entire house started to smell of mold and we knew we had to take drastic measures to remediate the situation. We had to move our family of five (including a newborn baby), along with our three dogs out for sixty days to have all the repairs made. We incurred over $40,000 in costs and filed a claim with the Shirley's insurance company. The insurance covered approximately $21,000 in costs and told us to reach out to the builder's directly to cover the costs of the mold and remediation. We did so, asking for the Shirley's to cover around $8,000 in damages. When we did reach out to the Shirley's regarding the costs for the mold remediation, they went radio-silent and we haven't been able to get any resolution.

Several years ago we had The Shirley Group do a kitchen addition/renovation. The job was completed; however, as you can see from the pictures a door and window were installed crooked and the living room ceiling shows streaks. During the pandemic we decided to have bonus room addition done which included installing a full bathroom. Because it is bonus room we do not use the bathroom very often and the shower less often. We used The Shirley Group as the general contractor which utilized Masterflo Plumbing as the plumbing sub-contractor. We first started noticing the hardwood floors were buckling; therefore, I asked Bill to come and look. He told me he was dealing with a family issue and gave me the name and number of the flooring sub-contractor (despite the entire time The Shirley Group Facebook page being updated for other jobs). I asked Bill if Billie Jr. or Ethan could help; however, Bill did not respond. I tried for months to get in touch with the flooring contractor and after several months he finally came out and told me it was a plumbing problem. Bill had Masterflo plumbing come out who said that the shower had not been installed correctly and had been leaking from day one (we did not notice it earlier due to the shower not being used very often and there is spray foam insulation below the shower). Initially Bill implied it was my fault then Bill stated Masterflos’ insurance policy would cover the damages; however, Masterful informed me (through a third-party restoration company) they would not be covering the damages. Bill, Masterflo and the third-party restoration company have told me to call my homeowners home-owners insurance and file a claim. I have had to put mold testing kits in the bathroom which early indications are there might be mold. Further, due to Bill only using sheetrock on the back side of the shower (not durock backer board) I am unsure how much mold has grown in the shower and under the floors. Now I do not know how much mold has grown, the extent to the damages (the hardwood floors are ruined), etc. What I am most worried about is the mold. This is in addition to some smaller issues, the concrete contractor has about 1 hour worth of work to do; however, despite numerous calls he just will not come out to finish the job. There is an outside light that is very similar. Finally, some of the trim carpentry/sheetrock was not done very professionally just like the kitchen. I am really on my own to deal with this. I would not use The Shirley Group again.

Bill and his two sons built a beautiful new house for us. Outstanding quality in a city that has very stringent building codes, they had no problems. We are so happy and will value their friendship the rest of our lives!

We met with and received quotes from five well-reviewed general contractors prior to choosing The Shirley Group to complete our major kitchen remodel. While many contractors were good talkers, it was clear that the Shirley’s were doers. All three (Bill, Billy and Ethan) of the Shirley’s were involved in the remodeling effort and Billy did a fantastic job serving as the project manager, always responding to every question or concern quickly. Our remodel involved completely gutting the kitchen and dining room, removing walls, building a pantry, installing custom-built cabinets and relocating plumbing, electrical, and HVAC . The fact that we went from demo to having the first Hall County inspections passed within one week speaks to the efficiency of the Shirley’s and their sub-contractors. The importance of the relationship between a general contractor and their sub-contractors can’t be overestimated and those that the Shirley’s use have been with them anywhere from 8 to 30+ years. We were especially impressed with Hugo, the cabinet maker, who built several cabinets based solely on photos we showed him. Surprisingly, the cost of our custom cabinets was several thousand dollars less than the manufactured cabinets proposed by the other general contractors. Our remodel was completed on time with the only cost overrun attributable to the electrical work being more extensive than originally projected. Choosing a general contractor to oversee an expensive and disruptive remodeling project is a daunting task replete with many horror stories and unhappy customers. However, our “HGTV” kitchen remodel exceeded our expectations and working with the Shirley Group was actually an enjoyable experience. They are honest, knowledgeable, and just good people. We have plans for several more home improvement projects and next time our first and only call will be to the Shirley Group.

These guys enclosed my existing patio, extended the deck to the end of the house, and added some exterior french doors from the master. Love them! They were a pleasure to work with from start to finish. I will definitely be using them again!

The Shirley Group is a father and sons team. They work together start to finish and produce a quality project. Their combined experience, energy, and creativity makes them more than just builders. I live in a 70 year old house that they did an extensive remodel on and I remain grateful for the time they spent working with me to create not just a fine house, but the home I wanted to live in. My father was a home builder and I worked with him when I was young. I have built and remodeled homes on my own. These guys know what they are doing and they care about doing a good job for the people they are working for.

This is family owned business who does excellent work. We are very happy with the way our project turned out. They kept us informed throughout the process. Will definelty hire them for our next project.

I highly recommend The Shirley Group LLC to everyone I know! They remodeled my entire downstairs and are currently working on my master bathroom. All the work has been highly satisfactory and we have several more projects planned with them in the future! They are extremely responsive and very easy to work with!
