Design influences everything in our lives. Design itself is influenced by the client, program, site, context and budget. It is our role to create more than the sum of these parts. When we have the opportunity to design, we can create something that will have a positive influence on our lives, and perhaps the lives of others to come. William D. Earls AIA NCARB holds Bachelor and Master Degrees in Architecture and is an award winning registered architect specializing in custom residential, commercial and municipal architecture. His work has appeared in numerous magazines and on the cover of Westport and AtHome Magazines. His work was recently awarded a Preservation Award from the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation. His work also received an Alice Washburn Special Commendation Award for Sensitivity and Restraint in Preservation from the Connecticut chapter of the American Institute of Architects. William D. Earls is the author of "The Harvard Five in New Canaan: Mid-Century Modern Houses by Marcel Breuer, Landis Gores, John Johansen, Philip Johnson Eliot Noyes" published by W. W. Norton and Co. 2006. Mr. Earls has lectured at Modernism Week in Palm Springs and at Rudolph Hall at the Yale School of Architecture. His work has been built in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Vermont and Florida.

Bill did a terrific job turning our renovation ideas into a new MBR suite that flows as if it were part of the original architecture. Amazing use of somewhat limited space, a really smart and elegant layout that incorporated everything we wanted. Good job keeping things on budget. Helped us to find/manage an excellent contractor. Lots of valuable design advice/perspective. Navigated us past a few big renovation surprises (and various mid-project client changes - yes, I'm guilty) without much ado at all. A real pleasure to work with him. 100% recommended - our first and only call for all future projects.

After firing two architects who were unable to meet our vision and budget for our 1954 mid-century modern house renovation project, we hired Bill Earls after discovering his book entitled "The Harvard Five in New Canaan" (W.W. Norton & Co. 2006) describing mid-century modern houses by five famous architects. The work done by Bill was transformative. Bill calmly and expertly guided us through a challenging renovation project, opening up the floor plan and introducing innovative solutions, including various sky lights, that flood our living space with light. The end result is stunning and represents excellent value-for-money. Bill clearly was born to be an architect judging by his skills and enthusiasm. He is reasonably priced and an absolute joy to work with. We would hire him again in a heartbeat.

William Earls raised our beach house post Hurricane Sandy. In the process he expanded our outdoor entertaining space and added a media room to the house. All seaside windows were replaced and re-designed to withstand hurricane wind and improve our sea view. Damaged floors were replaced and his guidance was not traditional, but looks perfect in this setting. Earls's design choices were all well-considered and substantially improved the function and style of our house. Earls was the third architect that we hired in this process. His easy manner, sure hand and refined sense of style were, at last, a perfect fit. The house gives the impression of having always been like it is now. We love our house and we have Earls to thank. Highly recommended.

I have had the pleasure of working with Mr Earls to raise my home to mitigate potential flood damage. Bill is clearly competent and is respectful of ones budget. He has also worked closely with many of my neighbors and the quality of his work is quite evident

Bill worked with us patiently over a year and half. It was a renovation that took the house down to the studs. The renovation consisted of many structural changes to the house. We raised the roof, added a third floor, completely reconfigured the second and first floors and did a complete makeover of the front of the house. The house transformation was incredible. We are very please with the architectural aspects of the job, very high quality and elegant. Bill is incredibly talented, very patient and thoughtful. He has a calm demeanor which helps during stressful times. He always made himself available to us. He is also honest and easy to work with. We would highly recommend Bill for any job, big or small.

We hired Bill to develop a plan for our circa-1700s home. It was a challenging project, as the home had an unusual layout, multiple levels, and very low ceilings. He came up with a plan that was completely different than anything we has envisioned, but as soon as we saw it my wife and I knew it was what we HAD to do. Bill is an incredibly thoughtful architect and designer. He measures by hand so that he can "get to know" the house, and has almost an anthropologist's curiosity for understanding how his clients live so that he can design the space around them. I think a great architect works with you but also challenges you, and Bill did both - he basically insisted, for example, that we add a playroom (which we were not in favor of!) and it's now one of our favorite areas of the house. He has fabulous attention to detail, both in the construction (of course) and in design details such as mouldings and trim. He's a great partner and a pleasure to work with - I'm so glad we partnered with him on our home and highly recommend him to anyone embarking on a major project.

We worked with Bill over the course of a year in a down-to-the-studs renovation. While most of Bill’s projects are traditional, he was very enthusiastic about renovating our mid-century modern. We met him at a lecture he gave when his book, “The Harvard Five in New Canaan,” was published. We planned the project for 6 months before beginning work during which time Bill learned about our lifestyle to help us create an environment that would support and enhance it. Together, we looked at some of the iconic moderns in New Canaan and discussed which elements might work for us. He recommended a wonderful contractor with whom he worked closely to bring the project to fruition. We moved in in 2008 and still thoroughly love and enjoy our dream house.

Bill helped me renovate and bring back to life a 110 year old waterfront cottage. He had great vision for what it once was, as well as what it could be. The living space is so light, taking full advantage of sun exposure. The proportions are spot-on, with architectural detail in each room but not over the top. I frequently notice people stopping to look at the house as they drive/walk by. Bill did a masterful job here. Everything came together beautifully!

Bill Earls did an outstanding job designing our project. We had two objectives; to expand our kitchen/family room and to add on a master bath upstairs. We also wanted to make it all look like the addition was part of the original house. Bill came back to us with a draft proposal and we were so delighted with the plan that his first draft became our final plan! Bill is very easy to work with. He has a kind, courteous demeanor and he gets along very well with the contractors. He helped us find a contractor and assisted us with selecting materials, etc. so we were able to keep the project within our budget. The project took approximately 9 months to complete and Bill was heavily involved throughout the construction so when there were issues or concerns with the work being done, he took on the responsibility to resolve them so we didn’t have to deal with conflicts. With all of the choices and decisions required to be made on a daily basis, it can get overwhelming but Bill broke down the decisions and he was always available and willing to consult on every small detail. Since completing our larger project, we have used Bill’s services on a few smaller projects including a stone patio that we love. Bill’s advice and eye for design has been invaluable and we highly recommend him and his work.

Our family is just completing our second major project with Bill Earls which included taking prewar homes down to the studs and rebuilding for todays lifestyles and needs. Bill is not only very talented but extremely knowledgeable and experienced in the entire process. He works on projects of all size as well as budgets of which he is sensitive to. He makes suggestions but really listens to clients in order to meet their needs. We are very happy with both of our projects and highly recommend Bill D. Earls.
