Building a custom home can be challenging. It is even more daunting when building remotely from another state. Fortunately, we selected John Kerber and Dominion Custom Homes (DCH) to build our forever home in Charlottesville although we still lived in Florida. At our first meeting, John Kerber presented as a friendly, knowledgeable and forthright builder. John immediately instilled confidence as a good listener, attentive to detail. In planning our home we had a myriad of expectations and customizations, based on what worked for us in prior homes as well as projected needs that would allow us to age in place. Throughout the build process, our initial perceptions of John did not waiver. He has a good sense of design and how to integrate the house on the lot. To our benefit, John assembled a great team that brought our ideas to fruition. DCH paired us with an architect who took great care to understand and translate our specifications into the design. We had unique expectations in wanting single floor living, contemporary styling, and six garage stalls. DCH’s contracts and accounting schedules are clear and comprehensive. DCH also had a scheduling system to coordinate the timing and delivery of materials, design selections, and installations which propelled the building process and kept it on track. Since we were building remotely, at the outset we had a schedule for meetings and/or calls to make product selections and design choices along the way. DCH was prepared for those meetings, kept to the schedule or provided honest explanation when the schedule had to be modified. Keeping to the schedule was immensely helpful in planning our visits and ultimate move-in date. We found the DCH team to be knowledgeable, skilled in their respective roles, and all around nice people to work with. DCH’s office manager/bookkeeper, Monica, was approachable, available to answer questions/provide explanations, and helpful beyond her job description. Before and during the build, we worked with Jean, a designer/decorator, who helped us focus in the face of a multitude of design choices. She offered guidance to create the style and look that we wanted. Our project manager, Walter, was our life line. We credit his skills and diligence in overseeing our quality built home and delivering it timely. Our building stress was minimized because we could count on Walter’s candid weekly reports via zoom or call, and emailed photos/videos. At the end of the building process, we had hoped for a turn key delivery so that we could relocate, and immediately enjoy our new home. DCH delivered just that experience: a new home complete with a security system, smart TVs, WIFI boosters, and landscaping. We couldn’t have asked for a more seamless and turnkey welcome on our move in date. We do love our new home and appreciate the workmanship and detail that went into its creation.
