Calum Duncan Architects was established in 2015 and has since grown with the completion of a number of imaginative and sensitive projects. We are based in Edinburgh and are working on projects throughout Scotland. We enjoy working collaboratively with our clients, consultants and contractors. As a practice we look to understand the most practical issues of a project while creating a unique and distinctive architectural character and atmosphere for each design proposal. We believe that good buildings are made by listening and understanding the users in an honest manner and leading the responses to these requirements practically, but with joy and imagination. We are interested in working across Scotland and comfortable with working for both private or public clients as well as cooperatives or community organisations. Our experience and expertise includes varied and often complex client organisations, but our ambition is to focus on any client’s ultimate aims and values. We value a close working relationship with the client and users. We especially enjoy working with clients who wish to live or work sociably with a proximity to nature and greenspace. This includes spaces and places for living, learning, working and relaxing, where our creativity and sensitive approach can improve enjoyment and wellbeing of our everyday lives in new or existing spaces.

Callum was very thorough and listened to our ideas. Planning permission was difficult to obtain due to SEPA's assessment of flood risk, and Calum tackled this well. He was realistic about the financial constraints within which we were working. We were pleased that planning took account of both the historic nature of the property as well as wider environmental issues. He was visible throughout the construction phases, and paid attention to detail.

We have worked with Calum Duncan Architects on a number of projects over the years ranging from small shelters to housing scheme. As landscape architects CDA are our go-to architects if architectural services are required for any of our projects. Calum and his team listen carefully to client’s requirements, approach all projects with holistic view, craft sensitive, site appropriate and sustainable solutions. Calum is an excellent communicator, who actively listens and consults with both - clients and the wider design team - to ensure aspirations are aligned. With his calm and considerate demeanour he brings clarity to the sometimes messy process of design and construction delivery. As a practice CDA are always clear about their proposed scope of work to ensure fees are fair reasonable. Calum Duncan Architects are highly professional, talented yet humble and sensitive architects who are a pleasure to work with and we look forward to many more joined projects in the years to come.

Calum Duncan Architects created a number of thought provoking designs, incorporating colour advice, clever internal detailing, choice of materials, and all with careful consideration on cost and the building’s particular use. I would not hesitate to recommend Calum Duncan Architects. They designed and project managed an extension and internal remodelling to our house. We are delighted with the design and finished project, it does not look or feel like the same house. They have incorporated some really creative and thoughtful ideas into the design. We never would have imagined our previously ugly house could look so good!
