Balken Roofing

I had Balken do a roof inspection of the home I purchased about two years ago. They recommended redoing the flat roof on an addition, using EPDM for about $2700. About nine months after they installed the EPDM, I had the first of three leaks in the new flat roof, When I called, one of the owners immediately pointed to the contract (no warranty) and was extremely defensive. After two subsequent leaks in two different areas of the roof; one inspection during which the person who came saw the leak, promised that he and the owners would confer to figure out what to do; a third leak in a different location; and being told repeatedly that they would get back to me, I contacted another roofing company. It turns out that Balken tucked the EPDM between the two layers of shingles where the main roof meets the flat roof and NOT under the bottom layer, which is what they should have done. Also, the outside edges of the EPDM were bubbling up because it was improperly sealed. It would have been easier if they had simply told me at the outset of the leaks that they didn't want to help me, instead of stringing me along for four months.

Im a senior citizen. I have a metal roof which had a small leak under the porch roof. I called Balken the end of July to get an estimate for the repair. Steve came out in August got up on the roof took pics and showed me what the problem was and what it would need to fix it. He sent the estimate, I printed it out, signed it and drove it and a check for materials to Balken so they could start the job. I was told by Chris when I dropped it off that James would call me to schedule. I never heard anything back. I called several times and also emailed Steve and the Balken email. Emails were never responded to. The communication back was nonexistent, even after I would talk to Chris and would be promised a call back. When I did get Chris I was told via phone that James would let me know when the materials were in and would be calling me to schedule. When I spoke to Chris he did not seem to know anything about the job, if the materials were ordered etc. James finally did call scheduled the repair and the crew came out. The next day we got a lot of rain. I went out to check where the leak had been and the roof was still leaking. I got yelled at talked over and hung up on by Heather Balken. She said “you need me” and “you owe me mone”. I was told their work was not warrantied. Steve I have a me called Next day told me to pay and they would come October 1 to fix it. They never called and they never showed. 5 stars for being liars. USE ANYONE BUT THEM.

he process started at the end of January. The initial estimate went well, pretty standard stuff. The original date for the job was pushed back due to weather. The second date was also pushed back, but no one bothered telling me they were behind due to weather, so they cost me an extra days vacation. March rolls around and they finally get to my roof. The job was done in 2 days but an uncovered dumpster sat in my driveway for 4 days blowing plastic trash all over my neighborhood. I've picked up over a gallon jug worth of nails. Up to this point I still hadn't contacted Balken, my primary dissatisfaction started when I actually got on top of the house and saw gaps where water could get to my chimney. The flashing looks sloppy and it is wavy. I emailed them the Saturday before Memorial Day and they still hadn't returned my call or sent an emailby the end of Tuesday. So I emailed them again expressing my disappointment. I got a return call at 6:42a the next morning!!! Who calls people that early? Heather was rude, interrupted me multiple times when I spoke and it was obvious that her call was a passive aggressive "ASAP callback". They came out next day, put more gobs of caulk on my roof and called it a day. I'm sick at the money I've spent and the cherry on the crap sundae they served me is all the nails I keep finding in my yard, car tires, and lawn equipment. Avoid this place at all costs.

The work they did was fine and the crew arrived when they said but the customer service and response time was HORRIBLE. Before I purchased my new home, Balken came out to give me an estimate for repairs on 7/15, which I had to pay for. I was told this cost would be deducted from the price of future work when invoiced. We already had a professional do a full inspection of the house, which included the roof, and pointed out the places of concern where we needed repairs. Balken was told, by us and our inspection report, exactly what needed repair before they even got on the roof or in the attic. Then, it took a week (and me contacting the representative who came to my home) to get the quote from them and for them to cash my check that I gave to the rep in person at the time of the estimate. After I agreed to the repairs and cost, it took weeks to get them to return my emails and calls so I could schedule. I initiated the conversation about scheduling on July 27 and was definitely forgotten or ignored. Told they would call me back, but didn't. I was finally able to get an email confirmation on Aug 15 that my work was scheduled on Aug 17, that Wednesday. It probably helped that we had actually seen leaking and I had sent them an email about that a few days earlier. The dispute over the credit for the estimate came when I received my invoice on Sept 1 and quickly responded with an email explaining the situation. They called me back the next day and said that credit only applied if we had the entire roof replaced. The owner immediately shifted the blame and insisted that my realtor and I are wrong, that we just misunderstood. Considering we had to deal with about 5 or 6 different people at their company, I don't think it is impossible that we we're told we would get this credit, especially if you kind of do that anyway. I am a young woman buying my first home and I think they took advantage of the situation and I am not pleased with the customer service that I received one bit. I felt disrespected and was spoken to like I was an idiot. There was no offer to remedy the situation or meet me half way. I had a lot of repairs and renovations done to my home recently by several different vendors and had no issues except with Balken. I will definitely be telling anyone who asks not to use this company in the future. I would have used a different company based on the experience I had with the scheduling process but I had already paid $150 that I was told I would get back in credit if I went with their company. I understand things get busy and people make mistakes, but I want people to be upfront with me at the get go and not drag me along in the dark for a month and a half. Be transparent with customers in the future during every process of their repair beginning with the estimate. Own up when you make a mistake - take the opportunity to remedy the situation with your customers so they don't walk away with a bitter taste in their mouths.

We received proposals from four roofing contractors and chose Balken for their guidance on shingle brands, the warranty, their price and reputation. We made the right choice. The communication at every stage was extremely professional - from the initial visit to the final invoice. Our expectations were managed at every step. The roof looks wonderful, but way before the final install - we had confidence in Balken. I highly recommend them. You can look around - but I'll save you the trouble. This is the best. You'll not find a better price, service or product in this area.

were contacted to fix a leak...did $500 charge for repair...still had leak...further inspection revealed roof wasn't leaking in first place...they never went into attic on initial inspection...moisture was coming from vent fan...unwilling to refund any $...they are experienced all right...experienced in taking advantage of you...I would never recommend them

Did repairs on roof at my personal house but have had clients to use them before. Had also done repairs at neighbors on my recommendation. Very prompt to arrive and did job correctly and efficiently.
