Alec Woodland Joinery

Alec made a fitted, double wardrobe for our bedroom which was faultless. A classic, simple design - which we asked for - with beautiful finishing and sleek interior drawers. We were so impressed we asked Alec back to build a cupboard and desk unit with shelving into alcoves in our daughters room. Alec helpfully worked with the awkward spaces we gave him and the finished result is fantastic. Finally, Alec was tidy, respectful and easy to have around which was great. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend his work.

Alec designed and built a whole-wall of mixed shelving and cupboards for us, along with a desk and utilities cupboard for our study. He took our very amateur sketch, and transformed it into a detailed CAD design for us to talk over; we had some odd requirements (space to include an existing cabinet, a large printer to accommodate, and some concealed cabling). All of our requirements were carefully included in the detailed CAD design. What has been really brilliant however has been the translation of that design into the finished product; we wanted the 'edge of ply' effect and the way he arranged the construction and mixed all of the different elements is brilliant. We are really happy with the finished product which is beautifully built, and robust. Alec even went to the length of selecting plywood with attractive grain for all the doors, and then cutting it such that grain in adjacent doors lined up - amazing eye for detail! Alec was totally reliable, always on time, and left the room immaculate after a big piece of work. Thanks so much!

Having dealt with Alec on 2 different occasions in our home felt it was time to leave a comment and that is that we had a jekyl and hyde experience. The first time Alec completed some bespoke book shelving and a bespoke sliding door. About £1500 of work and I could not fault his workmanship at all. He was efficient and clearly very skilled. Second time, very recently, we asked Alec to devise a bespoke under step storage cavity that would flatten out an up-and-down landing stairway section. We waited since before christmas for an evening Alec could visit. I had to be at a meeting but Alec couldn't be flexible on this date or time so my fiance tried to explain what we wanted but perhaps didn't do the greatest job. Alec sent a very basic description and price for his idea but would not accompany this with a sketch, or any measurements of the internal space that would be left after supporting joints. Pretty essential if this is to be a storage cavity. What would be able to store there eventually? If the space wasn't big enough then the whole thing wouldn't benefit us. Alec didn't make any effort to contact me by phone to discuss my alternate vision nor to explain his own solution, and deemed it would be a waste of his time sketching something I didn't want, even though he had not explained it so I could not be sure of that. The communication broke down and it was clear Alec simply didn't care about taking this project forward. I'm writing this because we were really disappointed by this change in dedication to customer service from before. We thought Alec was someone we we could trust to take the job seriously no matter the size, and it has cost us 3 months where we could have been collecting quotes from other busy tradesmen or even completed the job by now. Due to this, we wont be asking him to quote on anything again.
