This residence was designed to have the feeling of a classic early 1900’s Albert Kalin home. The owner and Architect referenced several homes in the area designed by Kalin to recall the character of both the traditional exterior and a more modern clean line interior inherent in those homes. The mixture of brick, natural cement plaster, and milled stone were carefully proportioned to reference the character without being a direct copy. Authentic steel windows custom fabricated by Hopes to maintain the very thin metal profiles necessary for the character. To maximize the budget, these were used in the center stone areas of the home with dark bronze clad windows in the remaining brick and plaster sections. Natural masonry fireplaces with contemporary stone and Pewabic custom tile surrounds, all help to bring a sense of modern style and authentic Detroit heritage to this home. Long axis lines both front to back and side to side anchor this home’s geometry highlighting an elliptical spiral stair at one end and the elegant fireplace at appropriate view lines.

This home’s focal point is its gorgeous three-story center staircase. The staircase features continuous custom-made raised panel wainscoting on the walls throughout each of the three stories. Consisting of red oak hardwood flooring, the staircase has an oak banister painted posts. The outside tread features a scallop detail. This light and airy home in Chadds Ford, PA, was a custom home renovation for long-time clients that included the installation of red oak hardwood floors, the master bedroom, master bathroom, two powder rooms, living room, dining room, study, foyer and staircase. remodel included the removal of an existing deck, replacing it with a beautiful flagstone patio. Our client chose a wool velvet by Ulster Carpets throughout six bedrooms, dressing rooms, landings and service staircases. The client opted for a bespoke taped stair runner carpet in Sisal by Crucial Trading from their Oriental collection to compliment the dark oak wood flooring, and age of the property. The carpet was cut to size on our first visit, taken to our workshop, and installed on our last day. The curved landing is a beautiful feature in this period property with the taped stair runner shadowing the curve perfectly.

The millwork in this entry foyer, which warms and enriches the entire space, is spectacular yet subtle with architecturally interesting shadow boxes, crown molding, and base molding. The double doors and sidelights, along with lattice-trimmed transoms and high windows, allow natural illumination to brighten both the first and second floors. Upstairs, in what may be the X-factor for this home, the men’s clubroom is revealed. Conceived as the ultimate “man cave” game room, this level is complete with a pub-style bar, a pool table, three televisions, and access to a gorgeous sun deck. Furnishings remain true to its masculine theme with fully tufted, Thom Filicia, crocodile leather couches, a chunky, cocktail table of reclaimed timbers, and an oversized, ribbed rug in slate blue silk.

This grand 2 story open foyer has an eye catching curved staircase with a patterned carpet runner, dark treads and dark stained handrail. A round center hall walnut table graces the space and is visually balanced by the orb "globe" style hanging pendant fixture above it. The patterned oval rug plays homage to the coffered ceiling above and aids in bringing ones eye up to this beautifully designed space. The living room with it's comfortable yet elegant furnishings and curved wall sconces with petite shades are also seen from the center hall. Off of the living room one can see a glimpse of the hallway's "curved" coffered ceiling, the console table with globe and wooden sculptures. The contemporary painting above the console's table brings everything together culminating into an elegant and welcoming environment.
