This rustic custom home is the epitome of the Northern Michigan lifestyle, nestled in the hills near Boyne Mountain ski resort. The exterior features intricate detailing from the heavy corbels and metal roofing to the board and batten beams and cedar siding. From the moment you enter the craftsman style home, you're greeted with a taste of the outdoors. The home's cabinetry, flooring, and paneling boast intriguing textures and multiple wood flavors. The home is a clear reflection of the homeowners' warm and inviting personalities.

The most notable design component is the exceptional use of reclaimed wood throughout nearly every application. Sourced from not only one, but two different Indiana barns, this hand hewn and rough sawn wood is used in a variety of applications including custom cabinetry with a white glaze finish, dark stained window casing, butcher block island countertop and handsome woodwork on the fireplace mantel, range hood, and ceiling. Underfoot, Oak wood flooring is salvaged from a tobacco barn, giving it its unique tone and rich shine that comes only from the unique process of drying and curing tobacco. Spires Interiors recently completed a new build project in Earls Colne, near Colchester Essex, encompassing the design and installation of a new kitchen and open-plan dining space, and utility room. The house is set in an incredibly scenic spot, and the customers have a passion for natural materials and in particular solid wood. They wanted a traditional finish in the kitchen, complemented by a colour palette that wouldn’t date, and found that our in-frame range offered exactly what they were looking for. The combination of different worktops works so well in the space as it adds character, charm, and a natural feel to the room, as well as warmth from the solid wood worktops. There is a living space at the end of the room and the colours and tone of the space reflect the relaxing area created. Made-to-measure doors and cabinets give us the flexibility to utilise every space in the kitchen by creating little units with pull-outs and custom-sized cabinets to make the room work as functionally as possible. The overmantle itself was manufactured in three parts after getting the specification from the design team and working with the clients to get it as the customers wanted. Working with these customers and understanding what they wanted was a pleasure, as they brought plenty of ideas to the project and were open to new ideas from our design team. Together we came up with a fantastic kitchen that they can enjoy for many years to come.

Mowlem& Co: Virtuoso kitchen This award-winning kitchen by Julia Brown effortlessly combines the classic with the contemporary, through the application of thoughtful styling and a clever use of colour. The timeless framed, shaker-style furniture is hand-painted in Farrow & Ball’s Railings, making a striking contrast with use of a Caesarstone worktop in raw concrete to the island unit and the beautiful Carrara Gioia marble on the splashback. There’s an industrial quality to the chocolate bronze metal handles that are recessed into the furniture doors, and the Siemens ovens are discreetly integrated to the island, which is raised on robust legs for a nod to the chic freestanding look. The design maximises both working space and opportunities for social interaction, with storage optimised by the extra height wall units that take advantage of the period property’s high ceilings. Pendant lamps, stylish stools and a herringbone white-washed Oak wooden floor add the perfect finishing touches.

This rustic/contemporary space was designed for HGTV House Hunters Renovation. In this space you will see the kitchen/dining room & living room. Textured subway tile was added as the back splash to give the space depth, while the medium color hardwood helped bring your eye up in the space.
