This charming patio combines multiple materials and weaves them together to create a warm and romantic getaway from the pressures of the day. The stone fireplace is built from block on site and covered in a manufactured stone veneer. It also includes accents of flagstone on the hearth, brick soldier accents and a stone slab mantle and brackets and to top it all off a cool Texas star. Throw in the stone pavers, pea gravel steps, small stone seating wall and stone border walkway and you have a very eclectic mixture of materials that come together to form a great space for entertaining.

Summer or winter this large concrete paver patio is the perfect place for the end of the day.

The pavers selected by the homeowners are Unilock’s Bristol Valley pavers in the steel mountain color, which is a beautifully subtle color blend. The rounded pavers along the edges of the walkway leading from the first door to the main patio area, and around the planter area by the wall, are Unilock Brussels Fullnose pavers. These rounded pavers in a lighter color provide contrast and soften the edges of the curved walkway and planter.

With a lengthy list of ideas about how to transform their backyard, the clients were excited to see what we could do. Existing features on site needed to be updated and in-cooperated within the design. The view from each angle of the property was already outstanding and we didn't want the design to feel out of place. We had to make the grade changes work to our advantage, each separate space had to have a purpose. The client wanted to use the property for charity events, so a large flat turf area was constructed at the back of the property, perfect for setting up tables, chairs and a stage if needed. It also created the perfect look out point into the back of the property, dropping off into a ravine. A lot of focus throughout the project was the plant selection. With a large amount of garden beds, we wanted to maintain a clean and formal look, while still offering seasonal interest. We did this by edging the beds with boxwoods, adding white hydrangeas throughout the beds for constant colour, and subtle pops of purple and yellow. It's hard to appreciate the beauty of this outdoor kitchen and pergola from the photo. Both the building and pergola are built using western red cedar. The V-groove siding on exterior is set vertically rather than horizontally, the more common application. Western red cedar is a great wood for use outdoors. It takes very little treatment and will silver with age. The folding window from Shenandoah Sash & Door is a specially-designed accordion window for this type of application.
