When a world class sailing champion approached us to design a Newport home for his family, with lodging for his sailing crew, we set out to create a clean, light-filled modern home that would integrate with the natural surroundings of the waterfront property, and respect the character of the historic district. Our approach was to make the marine landscape an integral feature throughout the home. One hundred eighty degree views of the ocean from the top floors are the result of the pinwheel massing. The home is designed as an extension of the curvilinear approach to the property through the woods and reflects the gentle undulating waterline of the adjacent saltwater marsh. Floodplain regulations dictated that the primary occupied spaces be located significantly above grade; accordingly, we designed the first and second floors on a stone “plinth” above a walk-out basement with ample storage for sailing equipment. The curved stone base slopes to grade and houses the shallow entry stair, while the same stone clads the interior’s vertical core to the roof, along which the wood, glass and stainless steel stair ascends to the upper level. One critical programmatic requirement was enough sleeping space for the sailing crew, and informal party spaces for the end of race-day gatherings. The private master suite is situated on one side of the public central volume, giving the homeowners views of approaching visitors. A “bedroom bar,” designed to accommodate a full house of guests, emerges from the other side of the central volume, and serves as a backdrop for the infinity pool and the cove beyond. Also essential to the design process was ecological sensitivity and stewardship. The wetlands of the adjacent saltwater marsh were designed to be restored; an extensive geo-thermal heating and cooling system was implemented; low carbon footprint materials and permeable surfaces were used where possible. Native and non-invasive plant species were utilized in the landscape. The abundance of windows and glass railings maximize views of the landscape, and, in deference to the adjacent bird sanctuary, bird-friendly glazing was used throughout. The house is designed to maximise the spectacular Avoca beachfront location with a variety of indoor and outdoor rooms in which to experience different aspects of beachside living. Client brief: home to accommodate a small family yet expandable to accommodate multiple guest configurations, varying levels of privacy, scale and interaction. A home which responds to its environment both functionally and aesthetically, with a preference for raw, natural and robust materials. Maximise connection – visual and physical – to beach. The response was a series of operable spaces relating in succession, maintaining focus/connection, to the beach. The public spaces have been designed as series of indoor/outdoor pavilions. Courtyards treated as outdoor rooms, creating ambiguity and blurring the distinction between inside and out. A progression of pavilions and courtyards are strung off circulation spine/breezeway, from street to beach: entry/car court; grassed west courtyard (existing tree); games pavilion; sand+fire courtyard (=sheltered heart); living pavilion; operable verandah; beach. Verandah is final transition space to beach: enclosable in winter; completely open in summer. This project seeks to demonstrates that focusing on the interrelationship with the surrounding environment, the volumetric quality and light enhanced sculpted open spaces, as well as the tactile quality of the materials, there is no need to showcase expensive finishes and create aesthetic gymnastics. The design avoids fashion and instead works with the timeless elements of materiality, space, volume and light, seeking to achieve a sense of calm, peace and tranquillity. Architecture Saville Isaacs https://www.architecturesavilleisaacs.com.au/ Focus is on the tactile quality of the materials: a consistent palette of concrete, raw recycled grey ironbark, steel and natural stone. Materials selections are raw, robust, low maintenance and recyclable. Light, natural and artificial, is used to sculpt the space and accentuate textural qualities of materials. Passive climatic design strategies (orientation, winter solar penetration, screening/shading, thermal mass and cross ventilation) result in stable indoor temperatures, requiring minimal use of heating and cooling. Both bore and rainwater are harvested for reuse. Low VOC and non-toxic materials and finishes, hydronic floor heating and ventilation ensure a healthy indoor environment. Project was the outcome of extensive collaboration with client, specialist consultants (including coastal erosion) and the builder. モダンスタイルの階段のリフォームを検討するにあたり、特に気をつけておきたいチェックポイントとして、安全性、機能性、そしてデザイン性があげられます。家の間取りや家族構成に合った階段デザインを選ぶことは、快適で安全な暮らしの鍵となります。選択した方法によってはリフォーム費用が高額になったり、工期が長くなったりする場合がありますので、あらかじめ取り入れたい機能の優先順位を決め、予算と相談しながらプランを選ぶようにしましょう。

安全なモダンスタイルの階段の種類を選ぶ

住まいの中でも階段は事故が起こりやすい場所。特に高齢者や子供がいるご家庭では、まずは安全性が確保できるよう工夫することが大切です。階段のデザインには昇降法別に「直階段」「屈折階段」「かね折れ階段」などの種類があります。その中でも特に危ないとされている「回り階段」「螺旋階段」「曲がり階段」を避け、手すりを設置する、踏み面に滑りにくい加工をするといった対策を取っておくと安心です。また、階段の途中に踊り場を設けたり、人感センサーライトやフットライトを設置したり、部材にカーペットやファブリック、コルクなどの素材を選んだりすると、さらに高い安全性を確保することができます。

階段のデザイン性と機能性を吟味する

階段は存在感が大きくひときわ目立つ住宅設備ですので、デザインも慎重に選びましょう。例えば「螺旋階段」は、小さなスペースにも設置することができるだけでなく、上階からの光を取り入れられるといった利点がある一方、上り下りがしづらい、方向感覚を失いやすいなどの欠点があります。「箱階段」は、階段下にトイレや収納スペースを設けることができるので、デッドスペースを有効利用することが可能になります。一方、圧迫感を感じる、設置場所が限定される、工費が高額になる、といった側面も考慮する必要があります。工期や予算が限られている場合、階段全体をリノベーションする代わりに、古く痛んだ表面を重ね張りしたり、手すりの素材を木製からアイアン製やアルミ製にするだけでも、部屋の雰囲気をガラッと変えることができます。

家族思いの動線を作る

一昔前は階段と言えば玄関に設置された玄関階段が主流でしたが、最近では家族の動線を家の中心に集めるよう「リビング階段」にリフォームする家が増えつつあります。どこにいても家族の気配を感じられる位置に階段を移動させることによって、家族間のコミュニケーションアップにつながります。また、1階の水回りスペースと2階のベランダをより短い動線で結ぶと、洗濯物を干す作業が楽になり日々の暮らしの中で快適さを実感できるようになります。
