Louisa, San Clemente Coastal Modern Architecture The brief for this modern coastal home was to create a place where the clients and their children and their families could gather to enjoy all the beauty of living in Southern California. Maximizing the lot was key to unlocking the potential of this property so the decision was made to excavate the entire property to allow natural light and ventilation to circulate through the lower level of the home. A courtyard with a green wall and olive tree act as the lung for the building as the coastal breeze brings fresh air in and circulates out the old through the courtyard. The concept for the home was to be living on a deck, so the large expanse of glass doors fold away to allow a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoors and feeling of being out on the deck is felt on the interior. A huge cantilevered beam in the roof allows for corner to completely disappear as the home looks to a beautiful ocean view and Dana Point harbor in the distance. All of the spaces throughout the home have a connection to the outdoors and this creates a light, bright and healthy environment. Passive design principles were employed to ensure the building is as energy efficient as possible. Solar panels keep the building off the grid and and deep overhangs help in reducing the solar heat gains of the building. This luxurious white modern house in Malibu is a true gem. The white concrete exterior, glass windows, and matching blue pool create a warm and inviting atmosphere, while the Greek modern style adds a touch of elegance.

Contemporary Modern Eichler home built by Greenberg Construction in Palo Alto. The dwelling is designed by Alex Terry and it takes full advantage of the environment by using indoor-outdoor elements generously. The project consists of transforming a 1950’s existing Joseph Eichler home. Using a similar material palate the design utilizes the primary floor plan of the existing layout. Folding out the horizontal and vertical planes of the first story to form an extruded ribbon where a large central area and second floor bedroom wing inhabit. The main living space is situated on the ground floor connecting the front garden and rear pool area. Two existing bedrooms and office areas are reconfigured to become more transparent to the outside gardens. The second floor accommodates extended family with two bedrooms, bathrooms and sleeping porches. Photovoltaic panels, solar water heating and rain catchment systems are used to offset energy and water loads. Large overhangs provide sufficient shade during the warm months.

CASA JO La CASA JO se encuentra en la Urbanización Amberes, en Torrox (Málaga), en una parcela orientada a sur y ligeramente elevada, de manera que además de una buena orientación, disfruta de vistas al mar. Los propietarios compraron la parcela con la vivienda construida en los años 70 y tras vivir unos años en ella, decidieron hacer una reforma total y añadir una primera planta, ya que necesitaban más espacio. La edificación en forma de L, tenía un muro que limitaba la relación de la vivienda con el paisaje. La vivienda en su estado original era una vivienda cerrada en sí misma, dotada de huecos pequeños y rejas. de forma que la relación con el entorno no era lo que sus propietarios deseaban para su vivienda. Decidimos plantear la vivienda justo dentro del perímetro definido por la vivienda original, ya que estructuralmente estaba formada por muros de carga y con este planteamiento conseguimos reducir el coste de la reforma. Eliminamos todo lo que no fuese necesario a nivel estructural, reduciendo la longitud de los muros de carga todo lo posible obteniendo así el tamaño máximo de huecos. Proponemos una primera planta conteniendo los dormitorios, sobre el lado de la L que queda orientado a sur-este, donde tendremos las mejores vistas al mar y el sol de la mañana. El resultado es una vivienda abierta al paisaje, dotada de espacios de transición entre espacio interior y exterior. Conseguimos una vivienda permeable tanto espacialmente como visualmente, dotada de terrazas y porches que permiten disfrutar del espacio interior y exterior en todo el año. Como recursos para conseguir la permeabilidad, además de disponer los huecos evitando cualquier simetría, proponemos recorridos no lineales. Proponemos superficies homogéneas, de color blanco en las superficies verticales y de color gris claro en las horizontales, sin hacer ninguna diferencia entre interior y exterior. Planteamos una pared de vidrio corredera, que en lugar de cerrar, difumina el espacio. Otro elemento que potencia la permeabilidad espacial es la escalera de acceso a la primera planta, diseñada de una forma abierta.

Nestled along the shore of Lake Michigan lies this modern and sleek outdoor living focused home. The intentional design of the home allows for views of the lake from all levels. The black trimmed floor-to-ceiling windows and overhead doors are subdivided into horizontal panes of glass, further reinforcing the modern aesthetic. The rear of the home overlooks the calm waters of the lake and showcases an outdoor lover’s dream. The rear elevation highlights several gathering areas including a covered patio, hot tub, lakeside seating, and a large campfire space for entertaining. This modern-style home features crisp horizontal lines and outdoor spaces that playfully offset the natural surrounding. Stunning mixed materials and contemporary design elements elevate this three-story home. Dark horinizoal siding and natural stone veneer are set against black windows and a dark hip roof with metal accents.

A weathered and natural material palette has been inspired by the texture of the cliff face. Concrete was utilised as the structure and main fabric of the building, deliberately exposed and finished in a worn and weathered manner. Timber window frames and cladding were introduced to soften the architecture from a Brutalist statement to an expression of a finely detailed and crafted interior tailored to the complex dynamic of a family of seven.
