Less is more! The simple beauty of two juxtaposing materials, concrete and steel. The two materials do not touch one another. Each material resonates while working together. Photos by Chen + Suchart Studio LLC

Exterior:
Set in a remote district just outside Halfway, Oregon, this working ranch required a water reserve for fire fighting for the newly constructed ranch house. This pragmatic requirement was the catalyst for the unique design approach — having the water reserve serve a dual purpose: fitness and firefighting. Borrowing from the surrounding landscape, two masses — one gabled mass and one shed form — are skewed to each other, recalling the layered hills that surround the home. Internally, the two masses give way to an open, unencumbered space. The use of wood timbers, so fitting for this setting, forms the rhythm to the design, with glass infill opening the space to the surrounding landscape. The calm blue pool brings all of these elements together, serving as a complement to the green prairie in summer and the snow-covered hills in winter.

This custom home, in Seattle’s Greenwood neighborhood, features a welcoming floating staircase that connects the spacious great room with the vaulted second floor. Light and bright, with warm wood throughout, the great room allows for flexible living for the whole family. Oversized windows flood the spaces with daylight and opportunities for backyard views. Upstairs, the primary bedroom opens to a rooftop deck with expansive corner windows, shielded by large trees for increased privacy.

Inspired by the venerable turreted estate at the approach to Charlotte Country Club, and itself resting on Eastover’s renowned Colville Road, a monochromatic exterior gently blends classic form with modern flair. A flowing floor plan arrangement is anchored by a central turret and multiple axis lines.
