In 1949, one of mid-century modern’s most famous NW architects, Paul Hayden Kirk, built this early “glass house” in Hawthorne Hills. Rather than flattening the rolling hills of the Northwest to accommodate his structures, Kirk sought to make the least impact possible on the building site by making use of it natural landscape. When we started this project, our goal was to pay attention to the original architecture--as well as designing the home around the client’s eclectic art collection and African artifacts. The home was completely gutted, since most of the home is glass, hardly any exterior walls remained. We kept the basic footprint of the home the same—opening the space between the kitchen and living room. The horizontal grain matched walnut cabinets creates a natural continuous movement. The sleek lines of the Fleetwood windows surrounding the home allow for the landscape and interior to seamlessly intertwine. In our effort to preserve as much of the design as possible, the original fireplace remains in the home and we made sure to work with the natural lines originally designed by Kirk.

Mueller Masculine Midcentury Modern Townhouse: Staircase

Breathe Design Studio

Completed in 2017, this project features midcentury modern interiors with copper, geometric, and moody accents. The design was driven by the client's attraction to a grey, copper, brass, and navy palette, which is featured in three different wallpapers throughout the home. As such, the townhouse incorporates the homeowner's love of angular lines, copper, and marble finishes. The builder-specified kitchen underwent a makeover to incorporate copper lighting fixtures, reclaimed wood island, and modern hardware. In the master bedroom, the wallpaper behind the bed achieves a moody and masculine atmosphere in this elegant "boutique-hotel-like" room. The children's room is a combination of midcentury modern furniture with repetitive robot motifs that the entire family loves. Like in children's space, our goal was to make the home both fun, modern, and timeless for the family to grow into. This project has been featured in Austin Home Magazine, Resource 2018 Issue. --- Project designed by the Atomic Ranch featured modern designers at Breathe Design Studio. ミッドセンチュリースタイルの折り返し階段のリフォームを検討するにあたり、特に気をつけておきたいチェックポイントとして、安全性、機能性、そしてデザイン性があげられます。家の間取りや家族構成に合った折り返し階段デザインを選ぶことは、快適で安全な暮らしの鍵となります。選択した方法によってはリフォーム費用が高額になったり、工期が長くなったりする場合がありますので、あらかじめ取り入れたい機能の優先順位を決め、予算と相談しながらプランを選ぶようにしましょう。

安全なミッドセンチュリースタイルの折り返し階段の種類を選ぶ

住まいの中でも折り返し階段は事故が起こりやすい場所。特に高齢者や子供がいるご家庭では、まずは安全性が確保できるよう工夫することが大切です。折り返し階段のデザインには昇降法別に「直折り返し階段」「屈折折り返し階段」「かね折れ折り返し階段」などの種類があります。その中でも特に危ないとされている「回り折り返し階段」「螺旋折り返し階段」「曲がり折り返し階段」を避け、手すりを設置する、踏み面に滑りにくい加工をするといった対策を取っておくと安心です。また、折り返し階段の途中に踊り場を設けたり、人感センサーライトやフットライトを設置したり、部材にカーペットやファブリック、コルクなどの素材を選んだりすると、さらに高い安全性を確保することができます。

折り返し階段のデザイン性と機能性を吟味する

折り返し階段は存在感が大きくひときわ目立つ住宅設備ですので、デザインも慎重に選びましょう。例えば「螺旋折り返し階段」は、小さなスペースにも設置することができるだけでなく、上階からの光を取り入れられるといった利点がある一方、上り下りがしづらい、方向感覚を失いやすいなどの欠点があります。「箱折り返し階段」は、折り返し階段下にトイレや収納スペースを設けることができるので、デッドスペースを有効利用することが可能になります。一方、圧迫感を感じる、設置場所が限定される、工費が高額になる、といった側面も考慮する必要があります。工期や予算が限られている場合、折り返し階段全体をリノベーションする代わりに、古く痛んだ表面を重ね張りしたり、手すりの素材を木製からアイアン製やアルミ製にするだけでも、部屋の雰囲気をガラッと変えることができます。

家族思いの動線を作る

一昔前は折り返し階段と言えば玄関に設置された玄関折り返し階段が主流でしたが、最近では家族の動線を家の中心に集めるよう「リビング折り返し階段」にリフォームする家が増えつつあります。どこにいても家族の気配を感じられる位置に折り返し階段を移動させることによって、家族間のコミュニケーションアップにつながります。また、1階の水回りスペースと2階のベランダをより短い動線で結ぶと、洗濯物を干す作業が楽になり日々の暮らしの中で快適さを実感できるようになります。
