A modern mid-century house in the Los Feliz neighborhood of the Hollywood Hills, this was an extensive renovation. The house was brought down to its studs, new foundations poured, and many walls and rooms relocated and resized. The aim was to improve the flow through the house, to make if feel more open and light, and connected to the outside, both literally through a new stair leading to exterior sliding doors, and through new windows along the back that open up to canyon views. photos by Undine Prohl

This craftsman kitchen borrows natural elements from architect and design icon, Frank Lloyd Wright. A slate backsplash, soapstone counters, and wood cabinetry is a perfect throwback to midcentury design. What ties this kitchen to present day design are elements such as stainless steel appliances and smart and hidden storage. This kitchen takes advantage of every nook and cranny to provide extra storage for pantry items and cookware.

Our Austin studio decided to go bold with this project by ensuring that each space had a unique identity in the Mid-Century Modern style bathroom, butler's pantry, and mudroom. We covered the bathroom walls and flooring with stylish beige and yellow tile that was cleverly installed to look like two different patterns. The mint cabinet and pink vanity reflect the mid-century color palette. The stylish knobs and fittings add an extra splash of fun to the bathroom. The butler's pantry is located right behind the kitchen and serves multiple functions like storage, a study area, and a bar. We went with a moody blue color for the cabinets and included a raw wood open shelf to give depth and warmth to the space. We went with some gorgeous artistic tiles that create a bold, intriguing look in the space. In the mudroom, we used siding materials to create a shiplap effect to create warmth and texture – a homage to the classic Mid-Century Modern design. We used the same blue from the butler's pantry to create a cohesive effect. This kitchen in a Mid-century modern home features rift-cut white oak and matte white cabinets, white quartz countertops and a marble-life subway tile backsplash. The original hardwood floors were saved to keep existing character. The new finishes palette suits their personality and the mid-century details of their home. We eliminated a storage closet and a small hallway closet to inset a pantry and refrigerator on the far wall. This allowed the small breakfast table to remain. By relocating the refrigerator from next to the range, we allowed the range to be centered in the opening for more usable counter and cabinet space on both sides. A counter-depth range hood liner doesn’t break the line of the upper cabinets for a sleeker look. Large storage drawers include features like a peg system to hold pots in place and a shallow internal pull-out shelf to separate lids from food storage containers.

Tired of the original, segmented floor plan of their midcentury home, this young family was ready to make a big change. Inspired by their beloved collection of Heath Ceramics tableware and needing an open space for the family to gather to do homework, make bread, and enjoy Friday Pizza Night…a new kitchen was born. Interior Architecture. Removal of one wall that provided a major obstruction, but no structure, resulted in connection between the family room, dining room, and kitchen. The new open plan allowed for a large island with seating and better flow in and out of the kitchen and garage. Interior Design. Vertically stacked, handmade tiles from Heath Ceramics in Ogawa Green wrap the perimeter backsplash with a nod to midcentury design. A row of white oak slab doors conceal a hidden exhaust hood while offering a sleek modern vibe. Shelves float just below to display beloved tableware, cookbooks, and cherished souvenirs.

We completely transformed the original small Kitchen into a space twice as large. The homeowner's love to cook and this new Kitchen is designed with both beauty and high function in mind with plenty of well designed storage, generous amount of counterspace and unique design features such as the quartersawn white oak table end of the island which intersects the beautiful white macabus quartzite waterfall edge. The two tone perimeter cabinets bring subtle interest to the space.

Clean lines and warm tones abound in this deliciously modern kitchen with hardworking stainless-steel appliances. Ivory walls and ceilings are trimmed with honey stained alder, a color seen again in the cabinetry. The warm tones of the wood are reflected in the shades of orange and red used in the contemporary artwork hanging in the hallway. Off-white quartz countertops cap the cabinets, while an extra thick countertop of the same material covers the island and waterfalls to the floor on one end. A handsome hammered bronze prep sink is paired with a faucet in a gunmetal finish by Watermark Designs and coordinates with the bronze wall sconce flanking the large window above the bar.
