Originally built in 1955, this modest penthouse apartment typified the small, separated living spaces of its era. The design challenge was how to create a home that reflected contemporary taste and the client’s desire for an environment rich in materials and textures. The keys to updating the space were threefold: break down the existing divisions between rooms; emphasize the connection to the adjoining 850-square-foot terrace; and establish an overarching visual harmony for the home through the use of simple, elegant materials. The renovation preserves and enhances the home’s mid-century roots while bringing the design into the 21st century—appropriate given the apartment’s location just a few blocks from the fairgrounds of the 1962 World’s Fair.

ダイニングは家族がそろって向き合うスペース。食卓を囲んで会話がはずめば、食事もいっそうおいしく感じられることでしょう。日本の家庭では、リビングダイニングとしてまとめられている間取りも多いですが、食事をいただく場所ですので、いつも片付いていて清潔に保たれているようにしたいですね。特に、朝食・ランチ・ディナーすべてをダイニングでとるという方は、いっそうインテリアに力を入れたい場所です。ダイニングの多くがキッチンの隣に設置されている場合、デザインに統一感を持たせると空間がすっきりとした印象になります。

ミッドセンチュリースタイルのダイニングのインテリアは“シンプル”が正解

ダイニングの主役は、ダイニングテーブルに乗る食事です。食事をおいしく食べる場所という役割が明確なダイニングのインテリアは実に悩ましいところです。例えば、レストランではフレンチ、イタリアン、和食、中華とジャンルごとにインテリアも食事に合わせてコーディネートしますが、一般の家庭では今日はイタリアン、今日は和食、とそのときどきによってメニューが変わるのでそうはいきません。なので、どんなものにも合わせやすい、シンプルめなダイニングインテリアで統一するのが正解。その代わり、ランチョンマットを食事によって変えたり、テーブルに季節の花などを飾ったりして、その料理を引き立たせ、かつ、ダイニングルームにアクセントを与えましょう。

ミッドセンチュリースタイルのダイニングの照明の選び方

ダイニングでは照明も重要なポイント。食材をおいしそうに見せ、家族の“おいしい”顔をはっきり映す照明の選び方を知りましょう。ダイニングの照明は、発色をきれいに見せてくれる白熱球がおすすすめです。ダイニングは照明の使用時間も長いので、導入費用はかかれど寿命が長いLEDのタイプが人気です。特に、食欲をかき立てる“赤色”が鮮やかに見えます。また、陰影がはっきりするので立体感が出て、お料理をいっそう美しく、おいしそうに見せます。 さらに、ダイニングにペンダントライトを設置する際には、その高さもポイント。高すぎるとまぶしさを感じ、低すぎるとテーブルの端まで光が当たらず、影ができてしまい、せっかくの料理も引き立ちません。シェード（傘）とテーブルまでの距離は、60〜80cm程度はなれているのが理想です。また、バランスのよいシェードの大きさ（直径）はテーブルのサイズの1/3程度とされています。ダイニングの照明は、実際に設置やシミュレーションをしてみないと、明るさや光の届く範囲がなかなか想定できません。ミッドセンチュリースタイルのダイニングの広さや間取り、自然光の入る窓の位置などを把握したうえで、照明の専門家に相談するのがおすすめです。
