This formerly small and cramped kitchen switched roles with the extra large eating area resulting in a dramatic transformation that takes advantage of the nice view of the backyard. The small kitchen window was changed to a new patio door to the terrace and the rest of the space was “sculpted” to suit the new layout. A Classic U-shaped kitchen layout with the sink facing the window was the best of many possible combinations. The primary components were treated as “elements” which combine for a very elegant but warm design. The fridge column, custom hood and the expansive backsplash tile in a fabric pattern, combine for an impressive focal point. The stainless oven tower is flanked by open shelves and surrounded by a pantry “bridge”; the eating bar and drywall enclosure in the breakfast room repeat this “bridge” shape. The walnut island cabinets combine with a walnut butchers block and are mounted on a pedestal for a lighter, less voluminous feeling. The TV niche & corkboard are a unique blend of old and new technologies for staying in touch, from push pins to I-pad. The light walnut limestone floor complements the cabinet and countertop colors and the two ceiling designs tie the whole space together.

Electric conduits were run on the original stone wall for electrical sockets and lighting above the worktops and Everhot cooker. Exterior lighting was chosen in a steel finish.

This beautiful 18th century Georgian family home is surrounded by parkland with stunning views across the rolling countryside and farmland beyond. By using multiple textures, the overwhelming wall of brick was softened and integrated into the space. Note the live edge on the slab of elm, the yarn-like texture in the glass, the perforated stainless steel panels in many doors, and the 1"-square glass tiles in the backsplash. The Hi-Definition laminate also has a textured face. The pattern in the floor tile relates to the hardwood flooring in the adjacent rooms. The island top is Richlite.

For an Asian contemporary design, we combined a light stained cherry veneer with dark (almost purple) oak. Taking advantage of the high ceiling, we created a 24" by 24" grid for the wall storage -- glass inserts applied judiciously. For designers their personal home says a lot about them. This is my kitchen. I like using recycled and found elements in unexpected ways. The kitchen island was built from a TV stand, legs from a side table, and hardwood flooring. The rustic sign was made from a piece of plywood that I found in my carport. The fireplace insert is made from plywood, insulation, and some cabinetry samples that I had. The goal is always to have the design reflect the people who occupy the space. My father-in-law's guitars line the wall, my great grand father's ox sits on the shelf, and words that my grandma always said to me as she gave me a hug hang above the door. This is my home.
