The homeowners started by hiring an architect to develop a vision and plan for transforming their very traditional brick home into a contemporary family home full of modern updates. The Kitchen Studio of Glen Ellyn was hired to provide kitchen design expertise and to bring the vision to life. The bamboo cabinetry and white Ceasarstone countertops provide contrast that pops while the white oak floors and limestone tile bring warmth to the space. A large island houses a Galley Sink which provides a multi-functional work surface fantastic for summer entertaining. And speaking of summer entertaining, a new Nana Wall system — a large glass wall system that creates a large exterior opening and can literally be opened and closed with one finger – brings the outdoor in and creates a very unique flavor to the space. Matching bamboo cabinetry and panels were also installed in the adjoining family room, along with aluminum doors with frosted glass and a repeat of the limestone at the newly designed fireplace. The kitchen & living room swapped spaces during the renovation & the fireplace was entirely removed in the interest of maximizing floor space. The reconfiguration gave the kitchen much needed breathing room & also accommodated a cozy dining nook. In the renovated family room, a new gas fireplace is flanked by built in bookcases that maximize functional storage and modern style.

This 120 year old one room stone cabin features real rock walls and fireplace in a simple rectangle with real handscraped exposed beams. Old concrete floor, from who knows when? The stainless steel kitchen is new, everything is under counter, there are no upper cabinets at all. Antique butcher block sits on stainless steel cabinet, and an old tire chain found on the old farm is the hanger for the cooking utensils. Concrete counters and sink. A close up of the kitchen space: Working with the homeowner in this kitchen area we designed the upper cabinets around an ideal look she envisioned for the cook-top area. We raised the cabinets to the 9' ceiling and added the smaller upper additions. We also enlarged the counter top for the island and added legs so that they could comfortably seat 4 at the island.
