Имеем: кухня с отделкой от застройщика, газовый котел со всеми подключениями по центру и горизонтальная газовая труба на пол стены. Решаем: в первую очередь, смотрим на план и делим кухню пополам. Слева гостей сажаем, справа кашеварим, а по центру, за полуостровом, совмещаем приятное с полезным. После чего, смотрим на котел, счетчик. Убираем их с глаз подальше, да так, чтобы ни один пытливый гость не догадался о том, что тут вообще было это буйство оборудования и коммуникаций. (По секрету - они в пеналах). Далее делаем реверанс перед Икеей и ставим между пеналами скромные раздвижной обеденный стол и стулья. Затем переходим к кухонному гарнитуру, думаем о бюджете, пару минут грустим и говорим себе: нет ничего невозможного. Чтобы заказчика кухня радовала как можно дольше, концепцию подминаем под реальные возможности и смотрим, что по рынку материалов. Определяемся с производителем МДФ для фасадов и столешницы, выбираем цвет из того, что имеем. А затем смотрим: что там по хорошей фурнитуре. На широкую ногу не гуляем, как и не ставим пуш-ту-оупен из поднебесной. Вместо этого, удлиняем фасады на пару см и открываем их, ловко хватаясь за заднюю поверхность (предупреждая вопросы - это удобно и практично) Диван ставим аккурат напротив телевизора и стола. Вы ведь знаете зачем он там? Верно, принимаем гостей наподольше, а в перерывах уминаем порцию супа за просмотром любимого сериала.

Inspired by the multi-functional performance of a shell structure in nature, the design of this two-bedroom, two-bath ADU explored a performance-based roof geometry that becomes the building façade and privacy screen. Coupled with deep roof overhangs, this second skin allows dappled light to penetrate the interior during the day while reflecting the detrimental UV radiation on the southern exposure. The perforations in the second skin are based on the effects of the sun path on the southern exposure and the location of the windows behind the screen. At night, the interior light glows through the perforations, contributing to the name of the project, “LuminOCity”. Orange Coast College and UC Irvine formed a partnership called "Team MADE" to enter the 2023 Orange County Sustainability Decathlon. "MADE" is an acronym for Modular, Affordable Dwellings for the Environment. LuminOCity won second place in the competition and 9 awards in various categories. Following the competition, the home was donated to Homeless Intervention Services, Orange County, where it serves as an ADU on an existing property to provide transitional housing for youth experiencing housing insecurities. This 750sf prefabricated, modular home is built on four, eight foot wide modules that nest together. The building system is predicated on a software-to-manufacturing pipeline called the FrameCAD Machine. This roll-former for light-gauge steel allowed Team MADE to prototype as well as site-manufacture every stud and track in the steel-framed home they would design. Over 100 student volunteers aided in the construction of the steel framing, MEP installation, building envelope, and site work. The use of prefabricated Light Gauge Steel allowed for higher construction tolerances with simplified assembly diagrams that could be followed by student volunteers. Joseph Sarafian, AIA was the lead architect as well as one of four faculty advisors on the project, leading the design of the project from conception to completion.

We recently took on an exciting whole-home renovation for this lovely historic Trinity in Center City Philadelphia. Originally built in the mid-1800s, the house footprint is just over 17’ x 13’. As is typical of this type of 3-story house, the kitchen is located in the basement, making this house four floors of occupied space with overall square footage totaling just under 900 square feet. The homeowner felt the former kitchen was cramped, dimly lit, and inefficiently designed, and she was in search of help in bringing her artistic vision for the space to life, blending both old and new elements through an exciting mix of textures and character. High on her priority list was integrating her wonderful collection of objects gathered from her travels around the world. We brought our design skills and construction experience to the team, working with the homeowner and the designer to develop a host of creative solutions, including the installation of an Indonesian screen as a sliding door covering a newly reconfigured utility area, which includes a new on-demand hot water heater, mounted next to a new electrical panel with ample room for service and access. Other Noteworthy Features and Solutions: New crisp drywall blended with original masonry wall textures and original exposed beams Custom-glazed adler wood cabinets, beautiful fusion Quartzite and custom cherry counters, and a copper sink were selected for a wonderful interplay of colors, textures, and Old World feel Small-space efficiencies designed for real-size humans, including built-ins wherever possible, limited free-standing furniture, and no upper cabinets Built-in storage and appliances under the counter (refrigerator, freezer, washer, dryer, and microwave drawer) Additional multi-function storage under stairs Extensive lighting plan with multiple sources and types of light to make this partially below-grade space feel bright and cheery Enlarged window well to bring much more light into the space Insulation added to create sound buffer from the floor above All Photos by Linda McManus Photography
