This 1,000 square foot backyard residence was designed to comply with the requirements of Seattle’s Detached Accessory Dwelling Unit (DADU) program, and can be permitted on most residential properties as a secondary residence, office or rental unit. The overall form is reminiscent of a traditional gable roofed house allowing the DADU to fit in well in suburban neighborhoods, while the specific design, material expression and openness are decidedly more modern. Designed with flexibility in mind, a lofted space upstairs overlooks the double height main living space below and both have ample access to natural daylight and views provided by the large glazed wall and skylights above. The main living space enjoys an open kitchen, and a large linear gas fireplace and opens onto a private patio/ entry area with large double sliding patio doors. The standing seam corten steel roofing and siding as well as the brick chimney were selected for maximum durability and for their natural beauty and low-maintenance characteristics. The gabled roof comes pre-wired for photovoltaic panels, giving the option to make this DADU net-zero.

A simple iconic design that both meets Passive House requirements and provides a visually striking home for a young family. This house is an example of design and sustainability on a smaller scale. The connection with the outdoor space is central to the design and integrated into the substantial wraparound structure that extends from the front to the back. The extensions provide shelter and invites flow into the backyard. Emphasis is on the family spaces within the home. The combined kitchen, living and dining area is a welcoming space featuring cathedral ceilings and an abundance of light.

Sudbury Modern Ranch House Addition (Sudbury, MA)

Reverse Architecture

The steel and glass addition was inserted into a narrow courtyard between the original ranch house and carport. The addition integrates with the original home while also producing dramatic new elements, such as the large translucent glass window in the front which allows light while maintaining privacy from the street. New zoning codes paved the way for building an Accessory Dwelling Unit in this homes Minneapolis location. This new unit allows for independent multi-generational housing within close proximity to a primary residence and serves visiting family, friends, and an occasional Airbnb renter. The strategic use of glass, partitions, and vaulted ceilings create an open and airy interior while keeping the square footage below 400 square feet. Vertical siding and awning windows create a fresh, yet complementary addition. Christopher Strom was recognized in the “Best Contemporary” category in Marvin Architects Challenge 2017. The judges admired the simple addition that is reminiscent of the traditional red barn, yet uses strategic volume and glass to create a dramatic contemporary living space.

A Family Home within Chichester's City Walls

Richard Gooding Photography This townhouse sits within Chichester's city walls and conservation area. Its is a semi detached 5 storey home, previously converted from office space back to a home with a poor quality extension. We designed a new extension with zinc cladding which reduces the existing footprint but created a more useable and beautiful living / dining space. Using the full width of the property establishes a true relationship with the outdoor space. A top to toe refurbishment rediscovers this home's identity; the original cornicing has been restored and wood bannister French polished. A structural glass roof in the kitchen allows natural light to flood the basement and skylights introduces more natural light to the loft space.
