Our project at Boghall House located in Linlithgow, West Lothian was bijou project that involved delicately inserting a new structure within the existing stone walls of a former coal store. A new asymmetric hipped zinc roof neatly ties the intersecting roofs together and hovers lightly above a glazed clerestory, separating the traditional stonework from the new addition above. This sensitive intervention into the existing historic fabric allows the creation of a new home office space and entrance, all contained within the adjusted stone walls of the former Coal Store.

This sensitive intervention into the existing historic fabric allows the creation of a new home office space and entrance, all contained within the adjusted stone walls of the former Coal Store.

This large Wiltshire new-build house was designed by Richmond Bell Architects as a Georgian-style replacement dwelling for a smaller, 1960s building. It is set in within a large garden in an Area Of Natural Beauty near Tisbury, Wiltshire. The new house is a three-storey building with four bedrooms and three bathrooms on the first floor, including a master suite with large walk in dressing room and ensuite. There are two further bedrooms and another bathroom on the second floor. On the ground floor a large open-plan kitchen and dining room opens into a conservatory room that has windows along two sides. The ground floor also contains a utility room, cloak room, study and formal living room. The house is approached along a sweeping private driveway surrounded by mature trees and landscaping. There is parking for several cars and a detached garage set back on the north of the drive. The house was built from local Chilmark stone with a striking front door set to the right of the front face and covered by a large open porch.

Located in the small, unspoilt cove at Crackington Haven, Grey Roofs replaced a structurally unsound 1920s bungalow which was visually detrimental to the village and surrounding AONB. Set on the side of a steep valley, the new five bedroom dwelling fits discreetly into its coastal context and provides a modern home with high levels of energy efficiency. The design concept is of a simple, heavy stone plinth built into the hillside for the partially underground lower storey, with the upper storey comprising of a lightweight timber frame. Large areas of floor to ceiling glazing give dramatic views westwards along the valley to the cove and the sea beyond. The basic form is traditional, with a pitched roof and natural materials such as slate, timber, render and stone, but interpreted and detailed in a contemporary manner. Solar thermal panels and air source heat pumps optimise sustainable energy solutions for the property. Removal of ad hoc ancillary sheds and the construction of a replacement garage completed the project. This waterfront home was conceived by the architects as a series of identically scaled, simply articulated gable-roofed elements linked by flat-roofed connectors. From the entrance driveway, the house appears almost as a village of individual granite residences. These two elements – gables and flat roofs – complement each other, establishing a dynamic of light and dark, smooth and rough, grounded and floating. It was critical to the ultimate success of this building that it be well suited and connected to tits content so that it seems like it could not be anywhere else. The home was positioned to capture this view and, in a way, imbue it with power. We responded to this directive by incorporating large expanses of windows that allow one to literally look through the house from the front yard to the sailboats bobbing on the water at the rear.
