Tucked into a hillside in the west hills outside Portland, Oregon, this house blends interior and exterior living. With a beautiful, hilltop site, our design approach was to take advantage of the natural surroundings and views over the landscape, while keeping the architecture from dominating the site. We semi-submerged the main floor of the house while carving outdoor living areas into the hillside. This protected courtyard extends out from the interior living spaces to provide year-round access to the outdoors. Large windows and sliding glass doors reinforce the connection to nature, while a large, open, great room contains the living room, dining area, and kitchen. The home is a single story design with two wings. One wing contains the master bedroom with en-suite bath & laundry. Another wing includes 2 additional bed/bathrooms, with one bed/bath pair able to function as a private guest suite. The exterior materials include Shou Sugi Ban rainscreen siding, floor to ceiling windows, and a standing seam metal roof. The interior design includes polished concrete floors, a fireplace flanked by accent walls of natural wood, natural wood veneer casework, tile and plaster bathrooms. The landscape design includes a variety of water features, native plantings and permeable pavings in the courtyard. The retaining walls of the courtyard are a combination of concrete and stone gabion walls.

Working on a constrained site with large feature trees to be retained, we developed a design that replaced an existing garage and shed to provide our clients with a new garage and glazed link to a multipurpose study/guest bedroom. The project also included a garden room, utility, and shower room, replacing an existing inefficient conservatory. Working with Hellis Solutions Ltd as tree consultants, we designed the structure around the trees with mini pile foundations being used to avoid damaging the roots. High levels of insulation and efficient triple-glazed windows with a new underfloor heating system in the extension, provide a very comfortable internal environment. Externally, the extension is clad with Larch boarding and has a part Zinc, part sedum roof with the natural materials enhancing this garden setting.

History: Client was given a property, that was extremely difficult to build on, with a very steep, 25-30' drop. They tried to sell the property for many years, with no luck. They finally decided that they should build something on it, for themselves, to prove it could be done. No access was allowed at the top of the steep incline. Client assumed it would be an expensive foundation built parallel to the hillside, somehow. Program: The program involved a level for one floor living, (LR/DR/KIT/MBR/UTILITY) as an age-in-place for this recently retired couple. Any other levels should have additional bedrooms that could also feel like a separate AirBnB space, or allow for a future caretaker. There was also a desire for a garage with a recreational vehicle and regular car. The main floor should take advantage of the primary views to the southwest, even though the lot faces due west. Also a desire for easy access to an upper level trail and low maintenance materials with easy maintenance access to roof. The preferred style was a fresher, contemporary feel. Solution: A concept design was presented, initially desired by the client, parallel to the hillside, as they had originally envisioned. An alternate idea was also presented, that was perpendicular to the steep hillside. This avoided having difficult foundations on the steep hillside, by spanning... over it. It also allowed the top, main floor to be farther out on the west end of the site to avoid neighboring view blockage & to better see the primary southwest view. Savings in foundation costs allowed the installation of a residential elevator to get from the garage to the top, main living level. Stairs were also available for regular exercise. An exterior deck was angled towards the primary SW view to the San Juan Islands. The roof was originally desired to be a hip style on all sides, but a better solution allowed for a simple slope back to the 10' high east side for easier maintenance & access, since the west side was almost 50' high! The clients undertook this home as a speculative, temporary project, intending for it to add value, to sell. However, the unexpected solution, and experience in living here, has them wanting to stay forever.

Modern design and time-honored techniques meld seamlessly in the Makai House, a 3000-square-foot custom home designed to strategically fit on an existing footprint, located a stone’s throw from the Fauntleroy ferry dock in West Seattle. A courtyard in the rear of the house, a covered patio, and the front beach are all physically and visually connected, creating dynamic indoor-outdoor living, constantly changing with the seasons and the times of the day. 前面道路から見た外観。外壁の仕上げはスタッコフレックスの塗り壁とし、色はオーナーとの打ち合わせの結果、ブルーグレーを採用しました。レッドシダーの軒天井とモルタルやコンクリートで仕上げた門柱、駐車スペースも相まって、どこかリゾートの雰囲気が漂う爽やかな住宅となりました。連続で取り付けたリビング吹抜けの窓サッシは、隣り同士サッシと同色のガルバリウム鋼板で繋ぐことで連窓のように仕上げています。

Home is a contemporary custom residence with framed views of two surrounding volcanic peaks on California's Central Coast. Designed by San Luis Obispo Architect STUDIO PRIME ARCHITECTURE (SP-ARC) and owner John Bellisario, AIA. Our clients approached us with a view to refurbishing and extending disused outbuildings within their garden grounds. The project is set within the Arnothill and Dollar Park Conservation area in Falkirk and proposes conversion of the buildings into a ‘granny flat’. The existing buildings are refurbished, linked and extended to the south with a zinc and timber clad conservatory maximising southern aspect. A new patio is formed level with internal floors and is provided with integrated planters to create a welcoming place to sit outside. Internally the spaces are open to the pitch of the roof creating interesting volumes and high level clerestorey windows allow light deep into the building plan. The two bedroom dwelling is heated with an air source heat pump and whole house underfloor heating system. Glazing and patio spaces orientate to the south to maximise exposure to the sun.
