Our client wanted more functionality from their small backyard. By adding a patio, gas fire pit, small pond with waterfall, walkway, all framed by plants ideal for the southwestern Michigan climate, we were able to create a space for gatherings and relaxation.

NORWOOD | FRONT GARDEN Breath of fresh air | Slick upgrade for front garden Front Garden Areas Our client brief was to give their tired ‘old’ garden a complete makeover. A new driveway to replace the old red brick drive, create a garden out of an unused passageway style lifeless garden. We guided our clients to embrace a new fresh look whilst looking back to the heritage style for design detail and quirky interest. The new driveway is polished concrete with strips of bluestone cobbles which link the new bluestone pathway to the front door. The cobble feature harks back to the 1900’s brickwork on the northern side wall. Here there are small feature bricks running parallel with the ‘old reds’ giving the wall visual interest and a quirky detail. A new front fence with a little more height for balance to the gable. The entrance entices visitors through a generous gate to polished concrete steppers planted with dwarf mondo grass. Newly painted driveway fence planted with Star Jasmine to create a green wall along the northern fence line. New lawn and garden beds cool the western garden areas incorporating classic modern garden design and lighting. There is an excellent balance between soft and hard landscaping. Our client had purchased a new build house that came with a patio and a lawn. They wanted to create a contemporary garden that would provide plenty of space for sitting and entertaining friends, whilst allowing their young child some space to play. A raised deck with overhead beams sits in one corner of the garden. Comfortable seating provides a space to enjoy the morning sun. A child-friendly water feature has been installed at the front end of the deck, where it can be enjoyed from the house, and a small swing has been attached to the overhead beams. Chunky rendered raised beds have been used to surround the extended patio, and part of the decked area. These can double as seating, if necessary. The planting palette is restricted, limited to plants that are mainly evergreen and easy to look after, with silver and purple foliage to contrast with the muted tones of the decking and raised beds.

garden border with lots of textual interest. Hakonechloa Aureola and Fairy Bells provide the grassy look in this shady area. ferns, goldenrod and ligularia provide great contrasting textures for a wild, natural look.

A relatively small site (400 m2) with big trees has been the main source of inspiration of this house. Decisions have been made to improve the relationship between the interior of the house and the garden, both in ground and upper level. Thus, the project conceives the landscape as a part of the house, and this garden is also a sustainable barrier that regulates the temperature inside (mainly deciduous trees). An open plan has allowed large perspectives. Wherever it was possible, sliding doors allow spatial fluidity while still allow some privacy. Natural materials (wood and stone) reinforce the connection with the garden.
