10 TV & Media Units That Steal the Spotlight
Make way for TV unit decor with smart storage systems that display big black screens, gadgets & accessories in style

Tangled cords, unlovely power strips and miscellaneous gadgets often gravitate around a TV unit, turning a living room into a frustrating mess. The media units you see below are equipped with compartments, cord cutouts and drawers to discreetly hide all that peripheral electronics clutter (remotes, speakers, DVDs and so on). They also help keep mementos, books, plants, ornaments and knick-knacks neatly and attractively. And, last but not least, they anchor a room’s decor, inject life into an understated interior and become the focal point, providing a stylish, smart and clean look to any room. Here are a few ideas to inspire you.
1. The wooden media unit with storage stands out as a dominant decor feature in this uncluttered living room. The stark colour contrast of the dark brown against the grey of the floor and the beige of the walls gives an almost 3D effect to the structure, making it look like it’s emerging from the walls. The large cabinets above and below hold all the peripherals, leaving the TV to star by itself without competing with too many decorative or electronics objects.

2. The volume and bulkiness of this semi-open, semi-closed TV unit with showcase is visually reduced with its neutral colour scheme merging with the similarly coloured walls behind. The open cabinets display books and quirky curios while the closed ones conceal bits and bobs that are better off hidden.
3. Sleek, magnetic and clean – these words come to mind when I look at this media unit finished in glossy black veneer. The ash-grey cabinets on top and the dark backdrop to the TV complement the sombre colour palette of the room, creating a swanky, stylish scape.

4. There are an infinite number of ways to arrange or build a media wall – this particular one forms an essential part of the room’s architecture. The ends of the criss-cross beams on the roof continue on to the build of the media unit, creating a dynamic space. The structure is used as a TV-cum-library unit, divided into smaller shelves that help break up the structure’s mass and accommodate varying depths of storage for books.
5. A wall-mounted TV with a backdrop made of engraved wood-print blocks of various shapes and sizes, put together as a collage and then painted white, makes for a lovely feature wall and a focal point in this room, A long cabinet under it allows for storage and its top, for keeping accessories, photographs and plants.

6. A toy cabinet and a TV unit – a system that offers more functions than one. The sleek design accommodates a light-blue glass-panelled back wall, with glass shelves installed on it for displaying toys. The multiple white lacquered drawers and cabinets offer plenty of storage and easy use.
7. This unit reminds me of a retail store’s display because of how well-structured, neat, orderly and organised it is. See how the symmetrical tall and narrow grid unit contains large vases, family photographs and typography, while smartly framing the flat-screen TV in the centre. The grey of the unit complements the sofa chairs and the system also covers a long stretch of wall, giving the room character and a certain edge.

8. Just like blocks in the game of Tetris, here, too, cabinets of different length and breadth fit in together. They are like slits within the wooden wall. The slim TV unit holding books, vases and various candle stands neatly placed inside it, give the whole area a clean, sophisticated look.
9. Talk about making corners functional … this image demonstrates a case in point. A wooden media unit has been installed within a wall niche. The long, horizontal shelves are further enhanced with smaller white units that help highlight certain key ornaments. The largest shelf at the bottom holds the TV, at eye level with the furniture. A great solution for cramped spaces.

10. Modular shelving, a work station and a TV, all installed in a single, freestanding media unit … what a wonderful 3-in-1 system. The brackets made in steel give strength to the large structure and the wood lends warmth to the area and complements the flooring.
