In 2003 James Dolenc and partner, Tom Riker, formed jamesthomas Interiors. After collaborating on several small projects, the couple decided it was time to launch their own interiors firm to service the needs of their growing client base. Today, the boutique company of ten employees services clients in both the commercial and residential ends of the field. While their projects are primarily in Chicago and the North Shore, jamesthomas has worked with clients in Sun Valley, Idaho; Flathead Lake, Montana; Park City, Utah; Sonoma and Del Mar California; the Turks and Caicos; Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; Poitiers, France; and New York City. At jamesthomas, we are known for our diverse aesthetic. We help our clients define their style and we bring it to life for them in the rooms that we design. While we are comfortable designing in many styles, every jamesthomas project has an undeniable undertone of effortless elegance. We believe that great interior design is innately hospitable. Your home should welcome you; it should surround you with feelings of generosity and abundance each time you enter it. We pride ourselves in our communicative style of service. We are collaborators who try to minimize surprises in the process. Because we are founded by two individuals, there are two distinct perspectives at jamesthomas. We feel that this duality benefits the client and separates us from many other firms. Our style recommendations will always echo the needs and wants of our clients, but there are consistent tones of affection, joy and hospitality across our portfolio.

We had the pleasure of working with James and Julia on a customer sofa sectional much like the two in their "Private Loft Residence." We received the final product this week and could not be happier with the quality and the entire process. The sectionals are extremely comfortable and the quality is absolutely flawless! The Jamesthomas Interiors team of professionals walked me through every step from a custom rendering to fabric swatch selection to final delivery with the utmost expert and quality care. And while I did not purchase the coffee table that was also included in the photo from them, they did provide the name of the company so I could order directly from them. As it turns out Murrays Iron Works is doing several pieces for my home. We will go back to James and Julia for information on other interior items as we finish our new home. Thank you so much!

We interviewed several designers in the area before hiring jamesthomas Interiors and were immediately impressed with their professionalism and ability to listen and interpret our needs for the way we wanted to live in the home. James and Tom are talented at working in various styles (Traditional, Contemporary…), something not all design firms can do and do well. And as we were starting with an empty home, a few pieces of existing furniture to incorporate and a desire to reconfigure the use of several rooms, it was far too overwhelming to tackle on our own. James, Tom and Anne helped interpret the style we wanted to achieve, guided us in the selection of furniture, fixtures, paint and wallpaper while respecting our budgetary requirements, to create a beautiful home we now enjoy every day.

We hired Jamesthomas to help remodel a 15 year old home we had recently purchased. The kitchen and master bath were completely gutted and the entire home was transformed with new floring, lighting, woodwork. It was a year long project. They helped us reuse much of the furniture from our old home as well as purchase new furniture and decorate every room. We could not be happier with the results! Our home is beautiful and all because of Jamesthomas. In the year spent working with them they were understanding, flexible with our schedule, reliable, trustworthy, and so pleasant to work with. I highly recommend Jamesthomas.

We hired jamesthomas Interiors to design and decorate the living spaces in our new construction condo. We could not have been more pleased with the result. All aspects of the project including planning, budgeting and execution were handled by jt with complete professionalism. The JT team was always in communication with us throughout the entire project and we really enjoyed working with them. Their style, guidance and eye for detail were exceptional as they helped create a space we love but would never have been able to achieve on our own. We would certainly use their services again and would recommend jt Interiors without qualification.

The jamesthomas team was able to transform what I thought would be an overwhelming, intimidating process into a smoothly run, creative, surprising, and fun experience. I learned so much from them! Tom and James really listened to each one of us (kids too) and then beautifully and thoughtfully incorporated our tastes and sensibilities into the overall design. We continue to be thrilled with the results – the design reflects who we are while respecting the particular architecture of our mid-century house. We especially appreciated Erin’s lovely manner, as well as her formidable organizational skills and determination to get things right down to the smallest detail. I can't recommend them highly enough!

Working with jamesthomas, LLC was terrific. They were involved in our new home project from the planning stages to the final furniture and accessories stage. They not only helped us choose furniture, but also helped us select materials, lighting, paint colors, window coverings and furniture for our outdoor spaces. We thought that the jamesthomas team really "got us" both in terms of our taste and preferences as well as our budget. They were open to a range of design ideas and were very budget conscious. They do not have a one size fits all approach to design, but rather focus on their clients as individuals (which was not our experience with a previous firm). We will continue to use jamesthomas for our design needs and have and will refer others to them. They were a pleasure to work with!

My partner and I hired jamesthomas, LLC, when we purchased our new home. They worked closely with the developer to enhance the design elements during the construction phase and also helped us with every aspect of the interior design. James Dolenc, Tom Riker, and their staff (particularly Emily Ash Gerow) were extremely professional and diligent. They formed a very constructive, and productive, relationship with our developer, making the process effortless for us. While I believe their work speaks for itself, my partner and I have been absolutely thrilled with the final product, from furniture selection to paint colors, and everything in between. I highly recommend!

We had never done a major remodeling of any of our previous homes, but we liked what we saw of jamesthomas' work on houzz, and when we met with them in person we knew we wanted them to handle the project. We never regretted our decision. James, Erin and Tom are outstanding designers and are really nice people. They listened to us carefully, educated us, calmed us when we got anxious, and were readily available when we had a question. They were honest, sensitive to our budget, and did everything they could do to make us happy. We would recommend them without reservation.

We hired jamesthomas LLC to design and manage the gut rehabilitation of our loft space. The project entailed combining two adjacent units and building a penthouse as well. The knowledge and experience of Tom Riker and James Dolenc combined with their staff of designers insured that the project reflected our personal style and was executed smoothly. Their personal approach to establishing the design vibe for the project was central to its ultimate success. In addition since they bill for their time instead of taking a commission on items purchased we felt reassured of the integrity of the design we ultimately enjoy so much. The jamesthomas team worked at every interface of this project from design to bidding to contractor selection to selecting and buying furniture, fixtures and accessories. The result is outstanding and we are confident we would not have been able to do the project without them. We recommend them unilaterally and without reservation.
