A bathroom is no longer just a utilitarian afterthought; it has earned a seat at the table (or vanity) as a bona fide interior design star. Today’s bathing havens are brimming with distinctive design features and luxe amenities ideal for soaking in the good life. Keep your bathroom current with the following trends courtesy of GROHE, a leading provider of innovative water products.
Immerse Yourself in Technology
Bath and shower innovations are transforming the way we bathe, saving us time and enhancing our cleansing rituals. Showers, such as the one seen here, can have indulgent light, sound and steam settings to create a customizable home-spa experience. Select the brightness and lighting color that suits your mood, and install in-unit speakers to shampoo (or dance) to your favorite song or audiobook while showering. And don’t forget the steam: Pick your temperature and intensity, and add lavender essential oil to the steam outlet for a heady experience.
Shower smarter. Sync up your tablet or smartphone to a digital shower system to select your experience in a few clicks. Or pick a simple two-button shower option to choose your temperature, outlet and water pressure quickly. Some systems let you pause the shower without a drop in volume or temperature when you restart. You can also take advantage of technology that delivers your desired water temperature within a fraction of a second — no more shivering on your bath mat waiting for the water to heat up.

Enjoy a New Wave of Materials
Updated materials reinvigorate your bathroom aesthetic and your bathing experience. For example, textured and 3D tiling are making a splash in 2017. Raised and recessed designs add energy and depth to a space. If you want to try out this trend without going too bold, opt for a neutral hue, such as the one seen here.
The design love for large-format tile (anything larger than 12 by 12 inches) also continues to flow. We’re seeing everything from 24-inch squares to floor-to-ceiling stone slabs. Other tile trends include bold patterns, geometric designs, fish-scale shapes, inventive layouts and mixing and matching.
Mix up your fixtures. Give large shower heads, rain-shower fixtures and body sprayers a whirl; combine all three for the ultimate pampering. Add a sleek, modern handheld shower head with spray-pattern options to help rinse out the shampoo. If you want to upgrade without a large renovation, look for a fixture that doesn’t alter the in-wall plumbing. As far as colors go, darker metals such as bronze, black and pewter make a daring statement. Brass and chrome are still holding strong, but for an updated look try a matte finish, such as brushed nickel. Mix your metals for an au courant look that packs a punch.
Add fresh features. Bathroom designers continue to offer new takes on age-old elements. If you have more money in your remodeling budget, replace your built-in tub with a freestanding one, invest in an antique-inspired vanity or add a French-door shower. If you’re looking for an easier update, pick up a round vanity mirror, consider a statement-making sink or try some wainscoting. All of these bathroom trends are making a name for themselves this year.

Channel a Natural Look
Biophilic design is alive and well in the bathing world, as more and more bathrooms are turning to the outdoors for inspiration. Try painting your bathroom in soft neutrals, moody grays or bold greens, and weave in organic texture. The rich brown porcelain tile in the shower seen here complements the off-white walls and bamboo-inspired porcelain tile floor. Its subtly grooved surface, coupled with the woven basket to the left, brings a pleasing texture to the space.
Connect to the environment. Large windows and doors can give you the feeling that you’re showering outside. If you’re concerned about privacy, use frosted glass, strategic placement or an intimate courtyard. Bring plenty of greenery into your space, and select a shower with nature-inspired spray patterns. Softly falling rain or a gentle mist soothes, while a heavier downpour stimulates the senses.

I couldn't agree more with 3D shower walls being too much maintenance. I can barely stand to clean my flat tile walls. If you can afford to hire someone to clean for you? I feel sorry for that person scouring those stupid edges & ledges. I love texture & stone, but I would limit it to other bathroom walls. Nice to hear that glass tiles are easy to clean, I love them anyhow. Stone bathroom walls with glass tile shower in same tone, I think may be a solution, though pricey. Also, I love a no door shower. Finstads makes a great point about wasted energy, yet debbiemi had no draft issue. My friend has an open stone tiled shower (in frigid Vermont) with radiant heat within shower walls. I guess if you have radiant heat in your floors, running it up the shower walls makes great sense.
debbiemi, so glad to hear you have done a 9x5 shower! The floor plan I am drawing for our bathroom includes a 10x5 shower. 5x5 to shower and 5x5 to dry off. The "wet" half will have glass block wall, with plenty enough room for a moveable shower chair. I don't want a permanent bench. Glad to know it won't be drafty! Thanks.
I like the splash of color afforded in the blue shower. I don't appreciate bland colors without something that makes the room pop. The beauty of the blue is that it is a soothing shade. Not so sure about shaving my legs, but great for romance.
