Among many materials that style the exteriors of homes, brick facades have a strong aesthetic value and are favourable for most Indian climatic conditions. This earthy treatment makes for an economical, low-maintenance and super-durable alternative to customary plastered surfaces.
From the Indian Coffee House at Thiruvananthapuram to the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, we have seen and loved iconic exposed brick structures by many celebrated architects like Laurie Baker and Louis Kahn … Let us now look at six recent contemporary Indian homes that have adopted this fundamental material and are now shining in its glory.

1. Designed by: Architect Ajay Sonar
Location: Pune, Maharashtra
Standing before a backdrop of green forest, this brick home exhibits a vivid and sophisticated design. The exposed surface exhibits the Raking Monk brick bond (a pattern of brick-laying) that resembles traditional Indian weaves. Repetitive recesses and projections made with the bricks bring a delightful twist to the conventional setup.
I like how the little additions of wood, glass and concrete complement and complete the red brick facade. The flat roof further emphasises the boldness of this structure.

Location: Noida, NCR
I just cannot take my eyes off this atypical home. The sculptural mass of this house comprises a cylindrical drum-shaped living space and a tall triangular wedge (extreme left) containing the bathrooms, behind which spreads the rest of the house. The boundary wall in the same material forms a hollow square that frames this structure. Built primarily in exposed brick and concrete, this building is a perfect example of a low-cost sustainable urban housing unit.
A long vertical perforated brick screen (on the front face of the triangular wedge) provides shade and privacy to the interiors. Black metal door- and window-frames add to the creative expression of contemporary facade design. The huge strip in white stands out to tie the triangular wedge and cylindrical block into one grand design.

Location: Bengaluru, Karnataka
In the process of renovating and making this 30-year-old home Vaastu-compliant, two extended exterior blocks were styled in brick and concrete. Featuring the Flemish bond with deep grouting, the brick faces are framed with exposed concrete and recycled wooden doors and windows. These features help the exposed brick maintain a continuum with the white mass of the building at the rear, linking with each other as a team.

This modern yet earthy reddish-brown facade is an unconventional point of interest in the posh colony of Sainik Farms in Delhi. The rough texture and clean design generates a curiosity about what is inside. The understated grey hues of the surroundings augment the plain brick exterior of this elegant home.

5. Designed by: Architecture Paradigm
Location: Mysuru, Karnataka
Impressed by the thermal features, low maintenance and timeless charm of this local material, the designers chose bricks to dictate the design language of this home. Speckled bricks, used in many forms, embellish the outer walls of this extroverted home.
The eye-catching screens connect the outside to the inside, and at the same time induce privacy and cooling. The screens are made of mild steel slats with perforated brick spacers, making for a secure textural partition wall. The boundary wall, stepped paving and backyard partitions also feature brick in its natural form.
