Hide it in plain sightThis TV area looks clean and minimal thanks to a neat storage area beneath the screen. The designers have built up the alcove wall slightly to blend in with the rest of the space, and lined up three sleek, handleless drawers where the owners can store all their digital paraphernalia. The black details in the predominantly white room help to tie the black screen in with the scheme.
When interiors stylist Susanna Hawkins and her husband bought their home in south Buckinghamshire, they liked the kitchen, but realised the layout didn’t function well for them. It was in the middle of the house with a conservatory behind it, and the only access to the garden was through a lean-to shed. “We bought the house in 2011 from a lovely older couple who’d lived here for 42 years,” Susanna explains. “The space was nice, but it didn’t really work for us as a family.” They hoped to extend and create direct access to the garden, as well as adding some extra kitchen worksurfaces.See 8 kitchens that integrate appliances beautifully

Conjure up atmosphereA hallway should be inviting, drawing guests into the house. An easy way to achieve this is by installing low-level lighting – like this mini pendant – to supplement your more practical fittings. The aim here is simply to create a soft pool of light to highlight what’s nearby, so fit a low-wattage bulb, one with a warm tint, or one connected to a dimmer.

Wood that’s not wood at allThere are so many different tile finishes on the market that it’s possible to recreate almost any look on your walls and floors. One tile finish that works particularly well in the bathroom is faux wood. Porcelain tiles that resemble timber floorboards are a great way to get the look of a wooden floor without the risk they’ll get damp, and consequently rot.Hunt around: there’s a variety of wood types, finishes and sizes available, so you should be able to find the perfect match for your bathroom.
Another consideration of the design was water run-off. “It was important to ensure there would be no flash flooding issues with water running off the drive onto the footpath and road,” says Orchard. This was another requirement from The Dulwich Estate but, as Orchard points out, “Any good landscape designer will make sure a driveway is flood compliant.”
