An Interior Designer's Custom Closet Transformation
Designer Shannon Wollack shares her sleek “grown-up” walk-in closet

When interior designer Shannon Wollack worked on her own Los Angeles home, she admits her closet was an afterthought. The founder of Studio Life/Style in West Hollywood, Wollack has refined her sophisticated, stylish aesthetic designing both commercial and residential interiors. However, designing other people’s spaces kept her very busy. “The closet wasn’t really a priority when we designed the house,” she says. “And as a designer, I didn’t have the energy to do it myself.”
Still, Wollack realized her bedroom’s large walk-in closet would be integral to the space’s flow and aesthetic. “The closet opens into the primary bedroom and bath, and I wanted to keep that same color story,” she says. “I wanted a clean and contemporary aesthetic, not the traditional heavy closet design.” Wollack shares the closet with her husband, so it also needed to be versatile — accommodating both her and her husband’s clothing and very different accessories. She turned to The Container Store Custom Closets, where she discovered the Avera line of fully customizable luxury closets.
A Hands-on Approach
The design process began with a highly personalized approach. “It started with a free in-home consultation with a designer who took measurements,” Wollack says. The specialist assessed the Wollacks’ needs, focusing on the primary suite’s closet but considering the home’s overall organization and storage too. Next came measuring the space and offering suggestions to customize the design.
”I really needed a little bit of everything,” Wollack says. “I needed a lot of shoe storage, and I wanted to be able to see my items without the closet looking cluttered.” She chose the Stone finish to complement the primary suite’s aesthetic. The design process took only three days, and the project was completed in five weeks. “Within five weeks, not only was my new closet installed but it also doubled in size,” Wollack says.

A-to-Z Coordination
The day after Wollack’s in-home consultation, her design specialist sent over a custom design for review; they worked together to fine-tune the details. ”We communicated back and forth with a few adjustments,” Wollack says.

After the three-day collaborative process of hammering out all the design details, Wollack left the project in the hands of the closet experts at The Container Store. “They allowed me to be involved as much or as little as I wanted,” she says. “In my case, they owned and coordinated the project from A to Z.” She even enlisted one of The Container Store’s in-home organizers to set up and organize items in the finished closet.
A Rainbow of Options
Lighting was a key component of Wollack’s wish list. For hanging both pants and shirts, she chose upper and lower racks along two of the closet walls. Above the hanging racks are two rows of shelving with integrated LED lighting along the underside. One row displays a handbag collection, while the top shelf is for deep storage. Wollack selected a collection of Kiva storage bins that blend with the Stone finish.

Adjacent to the primary bath, a wall of angled shelving also features LED lighting on the underside of the shelves to showcase her shoe collection. Just above that, open shelving displays her husband’s hat collection. For the couple’s folded and smaller items, Wollack opted for three banks of specialized full-extension drawers that have a push-open and soft-close functionality. On another wall is a long section for hanging dresses, topped by three more display shelves. All the drawers, shelves and hanging racks are backed with custom panels and reinforced by a hidden epoxy-coated steel framework.
Maximizing Every Square Inch
To organize smaller accessories, Wollack took advantage of the line’s exclusive customization options. The large space above the drawers is ideal for displaying her husband’s eyeglasses. The drawers are large enough to be subdivided, keeping smaller items such as socks and underwear organized.

Sliding jewelry trays fit snugly within one of the drawers, keeping bracelets, necklaces and earrings easily seen and accessible. Non-slip velvet hangers hold garments that need to be hung. “The Container Store helped me identify what I need, don’t need, and how my closet wasn’t working,” Wollack says.
Not only did Wollack enjoy the process of designing the closet, but she’s especially pleased with the result. “The closet provides a beautiful transition space between different areas of the house,” she says. “The bedroom, bathroom and closet all speak to each other. Now I’m happy every time I see it.”
