For Alexis Temkin, being able to live on the South Carolina coast means she gets to go paddleboarding in the local creeks and rivers. “My favorite thing about living in Charleston is that in just one Saturday, you can feel like you’ve gone on vacation,” she says. “Charleston makes it easy to get outside and get on the water.”
Temkin, pictured here in her kitchen, is originally from the Northeast and moved to the area to pursue her doctorate in marine biomedicine and environmental studies at the Medical University of South Carolina. She bought her first place — a renovated 1866 home in the charming downtown neighborhood of Harleston Village. Temkin currently works as a toxicologist at the Environmental Working Group in Washington, D.C., and splits her time between the two cities.

Temkin worked closely with her interior designer friend Taylor DeBartola to decorate and furnish the home using an ocean-inspired palette. A coastal feel dominates the interior, with light natural wood tones and blue decor accents. The homeowner describes her style as “coastal but not beachy.” The look derives from the colors and textures of the sea but is not overtly beach-themed.
The living room walls are painted in Baby Fawn and Woodland White by Benjamin Moore. “I’m obsessed with both of them,” Temkin says. “They really drove the color palette and set the tone for the kitchen, living room and bedroom.”

A set of reprints by 17th-century French artist Charles Le Brun hangs in the living room. This collection of artwork hung for years in the hallway outside Temkin’s childhood bedroom. “I think a lot of people find them somewhat creepy, but I think they’re fascinating and drive discussion around the emotions of humans and animals,” she says.

Throughout the home are mermaid decor accents, as seen with this blue vase on a vintage console in the entry. “I’ve always loved the ocean, and I guess the mermaid thing really sort of evolved naturally,” Temkin says. She adds that DeBartola nicknamed the house the Mermaid Lounge, “and that sort of became my personal brand.”
The two carved out a spot in the living room for a small custom desk where Temkin can focus on her schoolwork. The desk was one of her first purchases for the home, since she was spending so many hours writing her dissertation. She designed the desk and worked with local woodworker Capers Landrum Cauthen of Landrum Tables to build it.

DeBartola suggested removing the kitchen’s upper cabinets and going instead with a wall of open shelving. The homeowner says she feels the shelves makes the room feel even bigger and brighter. “It’s also forced organization for me,” Temkin adds. “The open shelving prevents me from having messy cabinets.” She added pullout drawers in the bottom cabinets at the last minute, per her mother’s suggestion. Temkin says they’re now one of her favorite features in the kitchen.

Temkin says she loves spending mornings standing in front of the kitchen window, holding a cup of coffee and looking at out at her view of church steeples. “I always check to see if Katrina, the hawk I named, is perched on top of one of the steeples,” she says. “That moment is grounding and peaceful, and that’s how the house feels to me.”

The table and the whitewashed open shelves, as well as other driftwood-inspired pieces throughout the home, add to the coastal-inspired feel.
“The brass faucet makes me smile every time I turn it on,” Temkin says. “I love cooking, and this kitchen has made me love it even more.”

In the dining room, Temkin and DeBartola continued the coastal-inspired color scheme by re-covering the chairs in a soft-blue fabric. The custom-made dining table was an early purchase for Temkin. She again worked with woodworker Cauthen to design and build the table.
DeBartola designed the master bedroom without nightstands. A California king-size bed fills the wall space, and without the extra furniture, Temkin has been able to cut down on clutter and screen time. “It’s a great physical reminder to shut off for the night,” she says.

Temkin credits her mother for the concept of using built-ins in the master bedroom. “She saw my overflowing closet and pile of clothes and went to work, and the result was a great success,” the homeowner says. “It elevated the room and provided a ton of extra space for my things.” As for the window seat, Temkin says it is occupied mostly by one of her cats. “But I think we knew that would be the outcome when we designed it,” she says with a laugh.
Temkin makes clever use of a bench at the foot of her bed to display and store her shoe collection.
Built-ins line the bedroom walls. Temkin considers them to be a lifesaver. “I have a lot of clothes and shoes. The built-ins really help keep them organized and, I think, actually make the room feel larger and smarter,” she says.
“This was my first home that I was decorating based on my style and not hand-me-down furniture, so it was important that I had a sense of self there. I also wasn’t sure what that style was,” Temkin says. She spent hours shopping in furniture stores with her mom, getting a feel for what she might like, and consulting her interior designer.
Temkin and DeBartola got creative when it came to space-saving solutions in the two-bedroom home. In the guest bedroom, the wicker headboards of two twin-size beds were pushed together to make a king bed. They can also be split apart depending on the guests. “It’s all about versatility,” she says.
The side table in the guest room is one of Temkin’s favorite pieces in the house. “I love the whitewash finish on it and the blue paint on the legs,” she says. “It looks old but fresh at the same time.”

The natural-finish wood flooring is one of her favorite features on the porch, inspired by local boutique hotel Zero George. “When I bought the house, [the floor] was painted the same color as the exterior, but I saw the natural finish at the hotel and loved it,” she says. “Most Charleston singles paint the deck, so I think it makes the house unique.”
Temkin says she loves spending time in the outdoor seating area. “It’s amazing what some new fabric, a rug and some garden stools will do,” she says. It’s a favorite spot for having dinner with friends or spending a quiet moment outside.

One big perk of living in the Harleston Village neighborhood is the close proximity to shops and restaurants on King Street. Also, while it’s in a coastal city, the house is not in a flood zone, which was important to Temkin. She’s grateful that her renovated home was move-in ready, since her strenuous graduate program would be taking most of her time.

On the front door, a whale-shaped door knocker is a tribute to time spent in Nantucket, Massachusetts, where Temkin would go on vacation with her family. “My family has been visiting the island every summer since I was really young, and it’s still probably my favorite place in the world,” she says. “The island used to be a whaling hub, and there is homage to that nearly everywhere. The door knocker was a way to bring a piece of that place to Charleston.”
