Looks like the builder had the guy who built the deck out back build these. That is the cheapest, fastest, guardrail on earth. I'd start there.

We just replaced a railing in our house that was exactly like this. As JC said, it was a very cheap way to build one. There are so many options. It is really expensive work to have done because it requires skill and precision (it's finish carpentry, not rough carpentry), so be sure to get a good contractor and don't accept the lowest bid.

Looks like there is a baby gate at the top. If you have young children, please avoid horizontal coomponents.

What do you mean by horizontal components. I do have two toddlers

vertical railings, not horizontal, to avoid climbing...

@kandrewspa gave you a few great options, but the last one fits your safety needs (I.e. you have little ones). Dark railings will update the house immediately. You can also look into different wrought iron designs.
