We are new construction and the fireplace needs a surround on the inside of the mantel - but I am not sure what? And what to do for a hearth? Was initially thinking slate. We are building on a lake, hence, all the windows. 12' ceilings. Suggestions welcome! Thanks!

A photo would help. By code - 12" of non-combustible material (usually stone) is required on the 3 sides of the fireplace opening. Depending on the width if the fireplace opening, the hearth must extend a minimum of 12" past the opening and at least 18" deep, unless the opening is over 24" high. Then the depth of the hearth extends.
