Actually I have to correct myself. We used a Schleuter on the base. The niche just was covered by the glass tile. It just takes a lot of craftsmancraftsmanship to get it all to line up perfectly. The niche is oversized and once the glass tile are laid the walls of the niche are built in with layers until the penny tiles line up perfectly and their edge is hidden.
