Were the large thermal stones hand dressed on site?

I love the way the driftwood is incorporated. Is the stone dry laid and or tied back to the (I'm assuming block) wall?

The granite is naturally aged. Set in mortar with brick ties to concrete block. This is a custom work of art by well known stone mason Lew French.
