Any suggestions to enhance the front structure of this house, please!

This house needs some help! We want take it from ugly to beautiful and endearing. A good paint job and a nice big porch would help but we are having issues with how to do it with the existing roof lines. Any ideas? Thanks!

How about posting pictures showing 45 degree views of the front.

What's the small window open into, and why no other windows on the front?

Posting a floor plan -- even a sketch will help with suggestions.

    Where are the other windows?

I think you absolutely need an architect. Any attempts to do it on your own will quite likely result in costly mistakes. Go with the architect first, then get professional landscaping/hard scaping. Please take before and after pictures to share with us. This will be a fun project!

Fantastic suggestions Housegal200! Lots of fun stuff to think about!

PPF - I will post some 45 degree angle pics tomorrow. The only window opens into the living/kitchen area. Yes, it‘s odd there are no others. The part that juts out on the house is an entryway/foyer area with stairs going up to the second floor right in front of the front door and then some stairs to the right going down to the basement/bedrooms area.

apple_pie_order. - We have lived by this house for many years now and we have often said and thought "that house needs more windows!" The lady that built it was very private. Thought it would be nice to add a little one above the entryway.

Grapefruit1_ar - Yes, we may need some consultation with a professional, especially of we get into messing with the roofline. We have some pretty handy guys in our family to help. Right now, we are trying to see if we can do this without it getting too expensive. I appreciate your perspective, and will ne doing before and afters! Yes, it should be fun!

Here's a house with a portico that echoes a roofline:

Not crazy about the pinkish color of the home, but I would add a window, shutters, stone at the base to balance the house & lights over the garage doors. Also that aluminum pipe coming out the roof needs to be framed out and faced with either siding or stone. Good luck.

Well! since you have been there for years and haven't done anything with the front of the house, you must have some money in the bank for an update?
My thoughts are in agreement with most of the other posts:

New non-pink color (sage green or gray-blue) for the body of the house. A fresh white for the trim and garage doors
At least two more windows: one to bring light into the entry hall/front stairs, and another window bringing light into the stairs going down. The single upstairs window needs some companions to make the house inviting. An architect will be needed to help you choose size and placement.
A trellised pergola for growing a flowering vine (or two vines, one started at each end in wooden tubs with trellis up) could run across the whole front above the front door all the way across the garage doors.
New lighting for front door and both garage doors..maybe carriage style mounted beside the top of each. New and larger house numbers, if needed.
A tree or three out front...for fall color (maple), dogwood, or other tree which does well in your zone. Some perennial shrubs and flowers in a couple of curvy planting beds. Plant only as many bedding plants as you can take care of.
The windows and then the painting are the most important. The other suggestions can be implemented as you have funds available.
The house has real possibilities for nice curb appeal.

Oh....and trim that big bush on the left.....there may be a spot for another window.

Yes, an architect with some vision is really needed. Stand in the rooms facing the front of the house and ask yourself where you'd like the windows to go. Imagine the possible views as you look out them. A bigger window in the living and dining room could be matched by a similar one on the other side of the porch entry. The grassy setting looks beautiful.

The architect's name for the original builder may be on file at city hall if they kept the plans. My guess is that the architect wanted more windows and the owner did not. The architect may still have design sketches on file.

Thanks, fellzlady! Your comments - much appreciated! We have lived next door to this property for years, but it has just been purchased - thus are just now being able to do something about the front of the house.

'Great minds' .... Gray- blue is one of the color choices that is being considered, and with fresh white trim! Like your thoughts on window placements, pergola and landscape.

And thanks for your vote of confidence on this house!

Yes, apple_pie_order, it was likely the owner that didn't want more windows - very private person. Like the idea of standing inside to determine window placement and will look up the architect if need be.

Glad you like the grassy setting!

Definitely a candidate for some thin veneer stone! Break up all that siding a little. We recommend a 3' wainscot along the bottom. That and a little paint will really change the curb appeal of your house.

With the warm brown roof, I wouldn't look at a gray blue for the body. I don't think the combination of warm and cool would work well together. The house does have lots of potential, it just needs some balance and some landscaping to add life to the angular lines of the house.

Katinparadise - very true, gray -blue would not go with the brown. The place is going to be needing a new roof in not too long though, so will get to choose a better color. Thanks for your perspective!

That's good to know. Lots of options then.
