To open up a dining room to the (already large) living room, or not?

Warning, long post..but please bear with me as I need your help!

We moved into this 70s/80's bungalow last year (we are in the UK)
We are installing a new wood burning stove in our living room, which is 6m x 10m with large dual-aspect windows/patio doors at each shorter end (north/south). The chimney breast in in the centre of the long wall and so this is where the stove will go. The main entrance to the room is slightly off centre with the fire place (this in itself drives me mad, design wise!) I just can't get to grips with how this room should look, at all.

As we are doing a degree of knocking out and re-plastering anyway to do this we are considering whether there is any further remodelling we should do at the same time so as to minimise the amount of disruption in future years and also have a space that works for us long term. We currently have 2 small children (3 and 18m)

We have a dining room (currently a play room) that is adjoined to the living room with a (70s looking) glass "box" on the north aspect of the house and I cannot decide whether or not to remove the partition and have a very large open plan L shaped room.

The other reason for considering this now is that we would need a larger stove if we make the room larger.

The benefits of opening it up would be:

1) to create a flowing and flexible space with different zones. (Dining, Socialising, TV watching/kids play) We would have two distinct sitting areas on the north/garden facing side of the room, one for relaxing watching tv, and one directed away from the tv. (At the moment we have all our furniture at one end of the living room and nothing but the tv and a couple of chairs at the other, with the fire in between, and the off-centre door splitting the space in a clunky way.

2) to create a dining space larger than the current dining room can accommodate

3) to freshen up and lose the 70s feel of the glass box room, (this is a bugbear of mine)

The negatives or my key design questions regarding open plan spaces would be:
1) Potential for mess to spread across all living areas with no easy containment. Is this really a big problem?
2) Does a dining table in the open living space work? Does it make a living room space look cluttered Or can it still maintain a "calm feel? Or, is it better to have it tucked away in a separate dining room?
3) I am concerned about the room potentially becoming too big and "cold" feeling. I need some design ideas to help the roomy feel permanently welcoming and "cosy" despite the size.
4) Floor covering - we love wood, but again unsure if this will make a large space "colder". Can add rugs, but is it better to have carpet?

I will attach some photos I took today. The rooms are not usually so messy but we had toddler guests over to play. This in itself shows one of my main concerns.

I should say, despite all these worries, I still really want to do it, but i'm worried about making a costly mistake too!!!

And the painting on the mantle is beautiful, but I wouldn't hang it there. Bit too large. Width is fine, but it needs a bit of space surrounding it. Would rather hang it on one of the walls next to the fireplace.
Oh... how exciting to have such a great space to fill with lovely items and great finds :-)

Carolins, We are definitely on the same page...cool

I have had my eye on the Ikea Stockholm tv cabinet in beige/white for the sitting room space, and the matching sideboard for the wall left if fire, but on measuring the space today I think the sideboard might not be large enough. It's 160cm wide. The space from corner to fireplace is 3.6m so I think a piece that's 180-200c might look better. (They are too pricey to get wrong!) the Besta range might work better?

I'm not averse to a bit of eclecticism (is that a word?) and I've been checking eBay, what do you think about a g plan style teak sideboard, maybe stained dark like the table, or painted gloss white (I also want it to look good with the dining chairs and lights... which are not yet conceived, hahah) Or is it just wrong to up cycle something so classic? I'm wary about having too much wood, or too many different types of wood

I have a story about that actually...my brother lives in the house I grew up in and which has a lot of my parents old furniture in it still. They wanted to THROW AWAY a wardrobe which was in my room when I was a kid, nice simple little piece with matching chests of drawers and bedside cabinet, teak, happens to be g plan. Anyway it had been in my nephews room recently and he wanted to have a mirror in his room... Can you see where this is going?... My stupid brother and his supposedly-an-interior-designer-wife agreed to attach disgusting wiggly mirrors to each of the doors of the wardrobe. And I had hoped they had just been stuck on, but NO! 6 sets of brackets screwed into each door. I was so so angry. (Still am, I suppose I have just answered my own question, above!)

    I digress.

On the other end of the table I would like somewhere to put glassware and other bits and pieces, and again i like the ikea Stockholm glass one (or two side bayside!) but might this all be a bit too much ikea??! Am I my phone right now but will link to pics when on the proper computer.

Re pictures, the two smaller prints are just propped there for now, but actually there is another one in the series, which I nearly bought. (Might still) Don't know why I didn't as I much prefer odd numbers when it comes to grouping thing. It does take me an AGE to decide where pictures are to go. I'm very fussy in this regard, drives my husband crazy (left a bit, up a bit)

Love the Stockholm collection :-) The glass cabinet is just perfect isn't it? I agree that the sideboard will be too small for that size of wall though. Shame.
Besta for the TV wall I'd say. Add cabinet or shelves above the TV too to draw your eye upwards. Not too much Ikea at all.

And on the subject of painting Gplan furniture, as long as you don't screw wavy mirrors to it ;-)....
Here, you may enjoy this site: http://www.lucyturner.co/

I did see some great long Gplan sideboards on eBay UK when I browsed a bit yesterday. For no money at all.

Love the 60s teak chairs above, and have a longstanding love affair with the eases dsw, and think they would look great, BUT my husband is not convinced by a "plastic" chair, plus I was having an internal debate about repro vs authentic. (Repro won by the way) but most of these are online so hard to ensure a good copy)

Also I love (and the other half like) the Wegner Wishbone chair - would defo have to go repro and there is a bewildering number of colour ways - it would take me forever to decide. Would look lovely with a Scandi type light above, and the g plan sideboard.... mmmmm....

The wishbone chairs are definitely in the very top half of my favourite chairs list :-) Friends of ours have the real ones and they are comfortable too, apart from being really stylish.
Plastic chair does equal sweaty bum. But I've read good reviews about the fake Eames Eiffel ones on overstock.com, so when I saw these... And I do like the look of them. But I do agree with your husband.

I too would prefer the real (or fake if they are as comfortable) wishbone chairs or vintage design chairs for a good price (like the 6 danish vintage ones, sadly that sale has ended).

I think I need a way to photoshop in different pieces of furniture into my room. Seen others do this, do you know how it's done?
  • Carolina
    10年前
I know how to do it. You need a version of Photoshop. I use Photoshop Elements. It's a bit of a learning curve, so if you're not familiar with it yet, I'd be happy to try and photoshop items in your room. If you post a pic or a link to the item you like here I'll see what I can do :-)

Oh thanks! I'm not up to learning a new software package at the mo, so much else going on! On hols this week to get some house jobs done, but am spending all my time on houzz, ebay etc window shopping for things I can't afford at the mo! Thankfully the husband is more practical than me, currently building a wood shed out of old decking.

So I have to prioritise... Chairs chairs chairs. Sigh, I do love the wishbone. Maybe I could get one every couple months and buy nothing in between times. And keep a good eye on eBay. ;-)

The habitat ones are ok... But not loving them, preferred the Danish ones before.
Saw some wishbones on bluesuntree.com for 119 if you buy 8.
Not sure about colour though, like the beech, but is this too much wood?

    Need to win lottery.

Is your dining table black? In any case, I don't think it's too much wood. As long as you put in some high gloss white or black items and bright coloured art. I think it will be lovely!
I'll do some photoshopping for you, but here's an example from Houzz:

I do like the shape. But I prefer the Wishbone (to most of what I posted too in fact). Mainly because I'm thinking it's more comfortable. You'd need to sit in them to know.

I do too, but I'm uncomfortable spending 1-2 hundred on a copy that I can't test out before I buy and would have to ship to return. This one is Ikea, so at least can try it for size/comfort. Will hopefully do an ikea run on Thursday anyway.

The other thing is the practicality of a woven seat... I'm thinking of jammy little fingers specifically.

Update: this weekend we moved some of our old furniture back into this room. One wood and glass cabinet, looks ok. Grandfather clock recently arrived from father in laws house, is beautiful in itself but the result, with all the other furniture, was too many different styles which made it look like a junk shop. Clock sent bCk into hallway.

It would seem all the chairs I like are Just. Too. Expensive. Can't justify designer seating at this stage in our lives, so we're back to choosing the dining lighting, and living with some old mismatch chairs for the time being.

On that note, how would these pendants fit in? I'm thinking of the dark table, dark wood wishbone style chairs (far future!) and a crisp shiny white sideboard with nice big lamps at the far end with ikea stockholm cabinet at the other. I want the lighting to be both task, and comfortable for dining. Not blocking the window too much (ceiling is 2.5m)

Any ideas greatly appreciated! Will try and get a better shot of the dining end.

Hi there, did you get a chance to go to Ikea? We just received the latest catalogue. Love some of the new items. Especially the Stockholm ones. And the Besta storage system, they have some great examples in the catalogue. Nice how they've combined different series, different depth of cabinets, different door colours.

Have you seen the Stockholm rug? It's a good size for a good price. Would that be something for under your dining table? Or another idea I had was a collection of different kilims (try auctions) that you can put together, bit overlapping, to create one large rug. You need LARGE in your room.

We didn't get to Ikea unfortunately. Husband will only go on pain of death, and definitely not with the kids so I was out voted this time. I will get him there though, I have to be more tactical... I will get the new catalogue too, cheers.

I know we must get rugs to make the place cosier, but at the moment it is quite nice not to have to worry about spills and other mishaps. (Will be going through a potty training in the next 6months or so!)

By the way thanks to everyone who has commented for your help and especially to you Carolins for your continued interest. It feels very hedonistic to sit on Houzz in the evenings with a glass of wine in one hand talking about my own room, in an "all about me" kind of way. All comments are gratefully received :-)

It will take me 6 months to decide on a rug anyway, so keep the suggestios flowing ;-) i like the idea of layering, would not have thought about that myself, but huge rugs are expensive so it totally makes sense!

Back to lighting, I saw this in store today and was wowed by it... not what I would normally have chosen (on website I have failed to see it several times!)

I hope you can remove the wiggly mirrors from the wardrobe and repair the holes with wood-filler and wood stain. I appreciate your love of the vintage furniture you inherited, and I do hope you can have it restored to its original glory for your own use and enjoyment in your home.
