Although we don't typically receive a lot of rain per year here our summers storms can be of high intensity. Our winter storms aren't problematic. Its a deep porch but rain from the North (view direction) can reach into the space a bit during a heavy summer thunderstorm.

So orientation and your local weather patterns impact a thorough answer to your question.
