ha ha ha! Speaking of shade, are there any small bird attracting plants that can sustain only western sun. It would not get morning or northern sun as it's planted along side high hedge?

For attracting birds it is great to provide them with somewhere to hide. So rather than a ground cover I would go with a small shrub. I would look at some of the different compact Grevilleas that are available now.
