Need help to chose a rug

I will repaint the walls a very neutral beige. I would like to add a rug, but not sure what colour. I have ared china cabinet in the dining room and I thought I could add a rug with red to tie everything together. My cabinets are white with a black island. Open concept.

With the pastel colors you have in your living room, you need to be careful about adding red to the mix, but you can certainly add pinky/rose tones in some pillows and then pick up the rose tones with a little bit of red in a rug. Look for a rug that has the sofa color plus some rose and a small amount of red.

I see your art has some red in it. Need to bring in a little more perhaps. Here is one that may work.

What might help you is to find a print fabric that has your green in it mixed with something pink or red. Your green is nearly a seafoam or celedon. . some of your existing pillows appear to have a lavender-y pink in them .. not so easy to mix with red.

You might want to change them out for a new fabric - use that fabric when you shop for a rug. Red comes in so many shades - you need a pinky red or plum red tone, not an orange red to make this flow. The smallest amount is likely best. Here's a quick search at calico - check beautifulfabric.com online too - they have great finds. http://www.calicocorners.com/p-9775-autumn-leaves-tutti-frutti.aspx

The other trick to pastels is that you will need a special color on the walls that works with both areas - lots of undertones to beige. You might go a bit lighter than you were thinking - a soft muslin or linen tone . . test bm natural linenhttp://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/naturallinen

I would recommend introducing red as an accent rather than a central element in a motif. You could go with either an all over motif or a medallion, as long as you keep the field neutral. Natural linen is actually one of the colours I am considering. These are all great ideas, thank you all. Changing the pillows is a great idea.
