living room

The room is our "living room" although we really don't use it. It is 11 x 13 with a small little cove area to the left of the window. There is one window. It is the first room that you come to as you enter our home on the left. Could you please help me with furniture placement or what I can add to make it look more updated.

a rug and a coffee table to start. some table and floor lamps, some accent pillows and some more art. and perhaps paint it a different color than the family room. take the chairs off the wall and move them in a bit once you get a rug. lower the picture over the couch.

多分見た感じでイタリアでヒットされたのであればベネチアンスタッコ（漆喰）下地に塗装で仕上げたものだと思います。壁面と床の際にグレー色の部分がありますので、グレーは漆喰の下地でしょう。イタリアでは多い仕上げで、この様な仕上げの住居を何件か見た事あります。

天井についている蛍光灯をシャンデリアに変更する場合

天井にぴったり付いている蛍光灯ですね。3つのことを考えなければなりません。 ①電源の供給は「直結」か、「引っ掛けシーリング」か ②天井にどのように止まっているのか ③蛍光灯を外した時に天井に跡が残らないかどうかまずは①から。これがわからないということですよね。可能であれば、写真を載せてください。器具を見てわかる範囲でお答えできるかと思います。さて、「直結」というのは、天井から出ている電線に照明器具の電線を直接つないでいる状態をいいます。このような場合には、電気工事士の資格のある人だけが照明器具の交換ができます。ご自身で工事することはできませんのでお近くの電気工事店に依頼をしてくださいね。「引っ掛けシーリング」であれば、何らかの方法で器具を外すことができるはずです。照明器具の品番がどこかに載っていませんか。あまり古くないものなら、メーカーのサイトで取扱説明書がダウンロードできる場合もあります。「引っ掛けシーリング」のほかに、「引っ掛けローゼット」という種類のものもあります。これは、引っ掛けシーリングのような丸い樹脂製の本体に金具がついていて、そこに照明器具をはめ込んで固定ができるタイプの物です。シャンデリアも商品や重量によっては、引っ掛けローゼットでないと取り付けられないこともあります。安全のためにもよく確認してから取り付けしてくださいね。次に、②です。直結の場合、照明器具によっては天井面にネジで止めているような場合もあります。この場合、ネジを外すと天井に穴が開きますので補修をしなければなりません。「引っ掛けシーリング」や「引っ掛けローゼット」でついている場合には、天井には止めていない器具だと思います。 ③です。引っ掛けシーリングで照明器具がついていても、天井にぴったりしている場合には照明器具の跡が黒くなっていることが多いです。壁紙の貼り替えや塗装なども視野に入れなければならないかもしれません。シャンデリアならば、シーリングメダリオンを付けて天井の汚れをかくしてしまうのも素敵ですね。軽量な物なら、ボンドと細い釘でご自分でも取り付け可能だと思います。メダリオンなど、室内装飾材料の大手のメーカーとしては「みはし」が有名です。一般の方がインターネットで購入できる商品とプロでないと購入できない商品が分かれていますので、ネットショップのアドレスを付けておきますね。

私もまさに今、新居のプランニングをしております！取り急ぎ、ソファだけは早めに欲しくて、グレーのソファーを購入してみたのですが、照明はこだわりたくてまだ決められていないんです。私はこういう照明にしてみたいなぁと思っています。（グリーンの照明は、Houzzのオフィスにもある照明なんです♪）あとやりたいのは、壁1面だけグレーか淡いブルーの壁紙にしてみたいと思っています。カーテンは、木製のブラインドにしたいなと思ったのですが、うちの場合は備え付けのものが付いていて、ちょっと断念しようかなと思っています付け替えると既存のカーテンの保管場所を見つけなくちゃいけないので^^; Chisaさんのお宅は、確かに下の部分の窓が素敵なので是非活かしたいですね！！！プロの方のアドバイス、私も聞いてみたいです！

株式会社ヒロデザインスタジオ様、貴重なアドバイスありがとうございました！和紙がユネスコ文化遺産にも登録されていたとは知らなかったです。以前スペインの小さな村に行ったときにわざわざ日本から和紙を輸入されて壁紙として使われている画廊がありました。やはり世界中で評価されているのですね！紫とグリーンのイメージがあまりできなかったのですが、[こんな写真[(https://www.houzz.jp/写真/garden-ornament-and-accessories-by-barnes-walker-landscape-architecture-manchester-phvw-vp~16839735)を見つけました（和ではないですが、、、）！グリーンが引きだって素敵です。「Kartell(イタリア)」のグリーンのチェアだと今の無垢のテーブルだと合わないかもしれないですね。テーブルも合わせて考えてみます！西陣織はおっしゃるとおり、アクセントに素敵ですよね。取り扱いのある会社さんを探してみます。どうもありがとうございました！

First find an area rug and bring the chairs onto it closer to the sofa for conversation.

And, we also had a rarely used living room. We purchased an antique desk and it now holds our laptop. It is a nice quiet spot for the computer. You could do that in your alcove.

To update the room, you could reupholster your chairs. But even just adding a sisal rug, bold pillows to your sofa and larger, more modern art above sofa would be a big change.

Your furniture looks to be good quality so recover to update the look. The matching chairs and the matching side tables are what makes the look dated. I like the idea of a special desk in the alcove area.

First, you have a couch in the adjoining room, so I would get rid of the couch in the living area--since you say the room is currently not used. Your goal here should be to make the room usable first and foremost. Should it look great too? Sure. But usability is most important. Perhaps you are looking to add some new hobby or would like to do more of something... read, sew, play games, etc... think about what you want *new* added into your life that will be worthwhile to spend your time doing. Maybe a bookshelf or shelves with some of yours and your family's favorite books...a couple very comfy reading chairs and lamps. Like pcmom mentioned, a desk would work here if you find it could be useful. You need to think about what you want to do in the space that you are not doing in another room in your house, or maybe something new you would like to try or a member of your family... Focus on purpose before you jump into "colors" and filling the space up with ___ .

I can't tell from photos but it looks like the living room that you don't use is a pass-through room used to get to the back living area. If this is so then moving the chairs away from the wall to make a conversation grouping by the sofa would only block one walking through. Make it instead a little reading nook without the sofa or a small study with a desk and chair, perhaps a floor lamp.

I think that adding a coffee table could make this room more useful. Also, in terms of updating the room a bit, I would replace the current frames with canvas art above the couch. You could also look into reupholstering the couch and chairs (and paint the legs of the chairs) to a more cohesive look. As for window treatments I would add a rod and clear sheers half way between the window and ceiling to create the illusion of taller windows.in the last picture there is a railing in a wood tone. Just an idea but I thought painting this white would create a more unified and uplifting look and would match your trim.

Since the room is rarely used, it's really too small to be functional, and it provides a pathway to the family room, I'd treat the two sides of the room as separate spaces. Get rid of the sofa, put the two chairs with a table between on the long wall and hang art behind them. A desk might go in front of or to the left of the window with a bench or row of plants on the other side.

I wouldn't reupholster the chairs unless they're shabby. I think their color adds the perfect spark to the space.

Don't guess you'd be interested in tackling that ceiling as you probably have that treatment throughout the home.

May not be the style you want, but this photo gives an idea of turning this space into a library. Line walls with books, add a couple of good reading chairs and light. Still have space for that useful desk in the nook.

I think part of the issue you're having is that all of the furniture is lined up along the wall. Have you tried placing the wing chairs facing each other on each side of the sofa? The place a decorative bench or something low and interesting under the window. Also- lower the artwork, about 6" above the sofa

Agree with earlier suggestions to ditch the couch & move chairs into a grouping in that space, perhaps around a game table, or go library style. It can jut halfway into the room as traffic would curve around rather than zip through.

The idea being let the traffic flow through, but this area could handle overflow entertaining from room that it leads to. And laptop, and reading.

Sorry I couldn't finish my comment yesterday. What kind of function is missing in your home? I agree with pcmom1 that this room would make a nice library, and the two wing chairs with a library table, floor lamp and area rug would work well. Built-in bookcases in the niche and all around the opening into the other room would add so much.

I like this idea of book shelves. Do you suggest painting them white as shown in the picture and given the current color of the walls in the living room?

Painting bookshelves the white color of your trim would give them a built-in look. The books themselves will add color.

@remodel1forme, I'd suggest going with an overdyed rug to ground the space and give it some depth simultaneously. I, too, agree that it would make for a fantastic reading space/library. And definitely you want to bring the furniture closer together -- having it all pushed up against the walls makes the space seem incongruous.

Nice! Maybe to add some lux, and soften the doorframe, hang rich panels on the doorway between new library and living room.

You could use the same treatment on the doorway and the window:

I would start by moving the wing chairs toward sofa so they flank it. Then slipcover all the pieces in a creme or neutral. You need a coffee table. How about an old trunk? White shutters on the window or side panels. Please get rid of the swags. New art, new lamps.
